Sergius was head of the "School of the Gentiles" and on very close terms with the Emperor Maximian, so that he was able to arrange for a friend of his, Antiochus, to become Roman governor of Augusto-Euphrates.
Bacchus was another official of the School of the Gentiles, and Sergius and Bacchus were both Christians at a period when Christians were still being persecuted.
He then sent Sergius and Bacchus in chains to Sergius' friend Antiochus, with a letter saying that if Antiochus could persuade them to change their minds and sacrifice to the gods, they should be pardoned and restored to their military rank, otherwise they should be put to death.
