 TiT Festivals: Appeasing the Spirits
The story told by the Saisiat elders is that the ritual appeases and corrects a great injustice, precipitated by a tragic incident involving a man of the Short People and a Saisiat woman.
They say that the Short People and the Saisiat were happy together, and shared their bounty pleasantly; but amidst the labors of one harvest, as the ceremonials were being prepared, the brother (or some say husband) of the offended woman--a young man--quietly sneaked out to the sacred grounds to avenge the perceived wrong.
The tale's conclusion is predictable: the Saisiat began to experience terrible tragedies for their genocide, for which they repented, and sought out the last of the Short People--two old women, who taught them the ceremonies they perform today to placate the angry spirits and amend the injustice of their ancestors.

While elements of the languages and culture of the 10 mountainous races have been maintained, most of the native languages of the Pingpu people have died out and no traces remain.
Among the mountainous aborigines, the Saisiat and the Atayal are believed to have migrated to Taiwan some 3,000 years ago.
Anthropologists have no idea what exactly happened, or when, to cause some of Taiwan's earliest natives to die out or disappear, but efforts to seek traces of the original natives' existence via anthropological, linguistic and historical studies have been continuing.

Taiwan's 9 indigenous tribes (Tsou, Bunun, Paiwan, Rukai, Atayal, Saisiat, Ami, Puyuma, Yami) are highly homogeneous within each tribe, but diversified among the different tribes due to long-term isolation, most probably since Taiwan became an island about 12,000 years ago.
Homogeneity of each tribe is evidenced by many HLA-A,B,C alleles having the world's highest ever reported frequencies, e.g.
Also, all of these tribes have HLA class I haplotype frequencies greater than 10%, with A24-Cw7-B39 in Saisiat (44.5%) being the highest, suggesting Taiwan's indigenous tribes are probably the most homogeneous (the "purest") population in the world.

Taiwan also has the densest grouping of Arstronesian languages, and the greatest number of different Austronesian languages, of any place on earth.
In addition to the existing Atayal, Saisiat, Bunung, Zou, Rukai, Paiwan, Amis, Yami, Puyuma, and Sao tribes, these also included the languages of Pingpu tribes that have been assimilated into the Han Chinese residents and thus become extinct.
In all, 19 different Taiwanese aborigine tribes spoke Austronesian languages; this proves the preeminent position of Taiwan's aborigines in the history of the development of the Austronesian peoples- and even the possibility that this island is the origin of the Austronesian race.
