Review: Gensomaden Saiyuki, by NotHayama   (Site not responding. Last check: )
It was pretty boring filler material, and the voice cast was mostly different from that of the TV series (except for Akira Ishida as Hakkai, whose voice is instantly recognizable and completely awesome)--but the cast, despite featuring the voice of Recca for Goku, was not as good as the later one for TV.
Saiyuki is an extremely complicated and successful project, so if you need any basic information this is the place to look (it was also invaluable for finding dates and episode numbers for this review).
Saiyuki has lucked out in the fanfiction department--it's easier to find a pretty good or even excellent fic for Saiyuki than it is for most other series.

One nice touch about Saiyuki: Requiem is the fact that the movie does not require too much back-story form the series, a person who has never seen the show can watch the movie and still be pretty entertained, which is no small feat in the world of anime.
Because Saiyuki: Requiem was released in theaters in Japan, you have the awesome choice of watching this DVD in Japanese 5.1 or English 5.1.
Saiyuki: Requiem has got everything a great anime movie should have, extra material for the fans, new info/back-story for the newbies, and a story that every one can enjoy.

Saiyuki is one of several anime versions of "The Journey to the West," but it's a quirky, off-the-wall retelling the author of the original Chinese novel might not recognize.
For one, Saiyuki's the dub is in league with Cowboy Bebop, and its dialogue is even better than that of the subtitled translation.
Saiyuki has lived up to all the hype and is a lovely reminder for those who have forgotten what it's like to *really* be rooting for your favorite characters in a series.

 IGN: Saiyuki: Journey West Review
Saiyuki is, for the most part, a straight skirmish-scale combat game.
As far as visual presentation goes, this is a dead ringer for Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre, but Saiyuki has its own style of play, closer to something like Vandal Hearts or Vanguard Bandits (although it dispenses with VH's guessing-game positioning, and it isn't half as cheap as VB was at times).
Saiyuki may not become an immortal hundred-dollar Ebay hit, but it deserves the attention of gamers who'd like a relaxing excursion into tactical combat.

JOURNEY INTO DANGER: Gensomaden Saiyuki Fanlisting   (Site not responding. Last check: )
"Journey into Danger" is the TAFL-listed fanlisting for the anime/manga series Gensomaden Saiyuki, the quasi-epic tale of four dysfunctional guys on a road trip to save the world...
Add to that a cadre of equally interesting opponents on their own journeys (including a demon prince who wants to save his mother and who's putty in the hands of his little sister), a couple truly creepy bad guys, and a unique art style, and it's a great series all around.
It's also a story that balances the drama and adventure with humor and moments of deeper emotion, and I think its greatest strength lies in the developing relationship between the four friends, in how their story began 500 years ago, and how it's going to end.

Saiyuki is similar to SquareSoft's Final Fantasy Tactics from a visual standpoint--it features isometric 3D field maps, which can be rotated by increments of 90 degrees, tilted, and zoomed out.
The gameplay, however, is a bit different; Saiyuki uses an orthodox turn-based combat system, as opposed to the active time battle (ATB) system used in Final Fantasy Tactics.
In any case, Saiyuki: Journey West is a welcome addition to the strategy RPG genre.

Saiyuki is a tactical/strategy RPG that centers around an adolescent named Sanzo or Genjo, depending on whether you should choose your character to be male or female.
Your main character was found in a basket floating down a river, not unlike the Bible’s Moses, and adopted by some monks in China.
And to make up for the previous flaw, characters can't "die," even if they disappear from battle, thanks to the fact that they are all important to the story.
