We use this 20th century pear as a symbol of Tottori prefecture, and with the catchphrase of "this freshness to the future", are promoting Tottori within and without the prefecture.
We in Tottori believe that this event of 180 years ago will be the new beginning of the ties between Kang Won province and Tottori prefecture, indeed the new beginning of the ties between Japan and Korea.
It is scheduled to be held in Tottori Prefecture in November of this year and we are currently planning a children's environmental summit, a historical and cultural research convention and children's cultural exchange projects, among other things, to coincide with this event.

On September 1, 2004 the towns of Tohaku and Akasaki from Tohaku District merged to form the new town of Kotoura.
On October 1, 2004 the towns of Hawai and Togo and the village of Tomari (all from Tohaku District) merged to form the new town of Yurihama.
On November 1, 2004 the municipalities of Fukube and Kokufu (from Iwami District), Aoya, Ketaka and Shikano (from Ketaka District) and Kawahara, Mochigase and Saji (from Yazu District) merged into the city of Tottori.

Sakaiminato, Japan -- From Oct. 18 to 20, USS Cushing (DD-985) visited this port city on the island of Honshu, in Tottori prefecture.
Although Sakaiminato is a busy fishing and merchant port, Cushing's visit was the first by a foreign warship in the city's history.
During the three days in Sakaiminato, Cushing received approximately 13,000 visitors of all ages, from infants to the elderly.
