Sakamoto Ryoma The Indispensable "Nobody" by Romulus Hillsborough
Ryoma was not opposed to boasting, and he had a big ego, declaring to his sister: "It's a shame that there aren't more men like me around the country." For all his boasting, however, Ryoma was also a realist.
Meanwhile, Ryoma continued to run guns for the revolutionaries, because he knew that the only way to convince the shogun to abdicate would be to demonstrate that his only alternative was military annihilation, which, of course, was no alternative at all.
Sakamoto Ryoma was assassinated one month later, on November 15, his thirty-second birthday, in the second-story room in the house of a wealthy soy dealer in Kyoto which he used as a hideout.

Sakamoto Ryoma was born in 1835 in Kochi City (Kochi Prefecture was previously known as Tosa).
In Ryoma's way of thinking, the unification of Japan could be brought about if the two strongest anti-Tokugawa clans of the time, Satsuma and Choshu (present-day Kagoshima and Yamaguchi prefectures, respectively) set aside their differences and formed an alliance, and in 1866 he succeeded in bringing the two former enemies together.
Ryoma himself was assassinated in Kyoto in November 1867 at age 33, and thus did not live to see the full flowering of economic and political development which occurred in the Meiji Era.

Though officially fighting on the side of such revered modernist reformers as Saigo Takamori and Ryoma Sakamoto (played here by former Nikkatsu star Yujiro Ishihara), Takechi followed his own agenda, using a squad of stealthy samurai assassins as his main weapon to eradicate his enemies, which included those who were officially his allies.
One of his most effective servants to this scheme was Izo Okada, a ronin of Tosa stock, and childhood friend of Sakamoto, who joined Takechi's private army to escape poverty.
Throughout, he is defined through the contrast he forms with Ryoma Sakamoto: clumsy, boorish, unkempt country boy versus the latter's unwavering air of determined sophistication.
