Sakip Sabanci never lost his rural accent and his sense of humor and philanthropy endeared him to millions who called him "Sakip Aga." Aga means "landlord" or "master" in Turkish.
Sakip's brother, Ozdemir, a member of the board of Sabanci Holding, was shot dead by three leftist militants in his downtown Istanbul office in 1996.
Sabanci was born in the central Anatolian province of Kayseri in 1933, the second of six sons of cotton trader and textile factory owner Haci Omer Sabanci.
