The presence of the Sakyapa teachers adds to the uncertainty because of their strong ties with the Chinese court.
While an exact date is difficult to suggest until both Sakyapa hierarchs flanking Sakya Pandita are definitely identified, it does seem to be an earlier rather than a later thanka, whether painted in Tibet or China.
Therefore, it is not improbable that this thanka was painted in a Sakyapa establishment by one of the Chinese artists imported into their realm during the fifteenth century.

As the teachings of Padmasambhava were inspired with newer ideas, the Sakyapa school arose as a syncretic faith combining the original Nyingmapa teachings of the 8th century with 10th century movements.

Shugden is not acceptable to Sakyapas, in the form given by it's Gelugpa followers, being, on the contrary, merely a harmful spirit.
This should be also compared to the forceful converting to it, of the Sakyapa sect of Jonang at the same period, and which thus illustrated the high-handed techniques being used, likewise, by the Gelugpas to insure their power at that time...and through til today.
At the same time, the Gelugpas banned the Sakyapa Jalpo deity and highjacked their lineage (of Sakya) to make the Jalpo fake lineage of Shugden and thus debased the lineage to a demonic status, which would be that of Jalpo.
