Salamander also marked the first appearance of a feature that, while never included in the Gradius games, was used throughout the rest of the Salamander series (and in Konami's SNES shooter Axelay as well) - alternating views for the different levels.
The NES game had several bosses and levels that were exclusive to it alone, and the music in the game is a mixture of music from both the Salamander and Life Force arcade games.
Salamander 2's music is made up of entirely new compositions for the most part, although in Loop 2 new versions of classic Salamander themes resurface (there's even a new version of one of the themes from Thundercross too, although I'm not sure which one it is).

OPCFG: ARE THE HOME VERSIONS OF SOME GRADIUS ARCADE GAMES DIRECT PORTS?
In the arcade game, Stage 2's boss, the Intruder, is organic rather than mechanical like it is in all of the other games that it's in.
The organic level which made up the final stage of the SNES game appears much earlier in the arcade game, and the boss of that stage is exclusive to the arcade game.
The last stage of the arcade game was seperated into four stages in the SNES game - the boss stage, the Gauntlet, the confrontation with the Bacterion Emperor, and the escape.

Some common games show up as very rare here because collectors don't want them (they are common because arcade operatos might be sitting on tons of them in warehouses), while some fairly scarce games are grabbed by collectors every time they show up.
Additionally, some games made in the last 5 years are still making money for operators and are thus not yet affordable to the typical collector.

It was created by Kazuhisa Hashimoto, who was developing the home port of the 1985 arcade game Gradius, a scrolling shooter released on the Famicom and Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986.
Finding the game too difficult to play through during testing, he created a code which gives the player a full set of powerups, which are normally attained gradually throughout the game.
In the classic arcade game collection Konami Collector's Series: Arcade Advanced, when the Konami Code is entered on any main menu of a game, you unlock a version of the game with enchanced graphics and/or additional features or extra lives.

The Gradius Base: ARE THE HOME VERSIONS OF SOME GRADIUS ARCADE GAMES DIRECT PORTS?
In fact, one review I saw even claimed that Gradius IV was an emulation of an SNES game, which is 100% wrong - Gradius IV didn't hit arcades until 1998, shortly after the SNES was retired, and there was never a home version of the game until Gradius III and IV was released.
Luckily it's possible to own the original arcade versions of each game thanks to the import only Gradius Deluxe Pack and Salamander Deluxe Pack Plus for the PlayStation and Saturn, and Gradius III and IV, which is available for the U.S. PlayStation 2.
The reasonb for this becomes apparent at the end of the level - after fighting the second level boss from the arcade game, you're confronted with a new boss - Giga from the NES version of Life Force, who's much better looking now and has a brand-new laser attack.

My suspicions were aroused when watching the battle sequences and then remembering that (Japanese arcade game giants) Konami were one of the companies behind this series, and sure enough, the arcade game Salamander made its way to these shores a few years ago.
However, whereas most films/anime lead to arcade and video game versions, it appears with Salamander that the process evolved the other way around, i.e.

Sound Test Review: Gradius III Original Soundtrack
Just as Gradius III was a shining example of shooter games at the height of their generation, so is the soundtrack the pinnacle of late 80's arcade gaming.
The sound system used by Konami at this point was advanced for an arcade game, and while you won't mistake this for an actual orchestra like you might in Final Fantasy Tactics, this is a far cry from the extremely artificially synthesizing of most games of its time.
Tracks 5 through 12 are the meat of the disc and contain the original soundtrack to the arcade game.

Kikizo Games: PSP Review: Gradius Collection (Page 2)
The arcade version of Gradius III is notorious within the Gradius community as being the most frustrating game in the series.
At times the game seems to take no prisoners, as was the case when battling through the series of bosses during the Boss on Parade portion of the game, only to lose to the final boss encounter during that portion of the game and have to restart the entire process all over again.
With all that said, Gradius IV isn't a bad game by any means, but unfortunately, it's the one game in the series where you can't help but feel as if Konami either got lazy or just ran out of ideas as the game didn't really bring anything new to the proverbial table.

Pit Fighter is definitely an excellent game, but my worry is that Atari waited to long to release it, since the mention of Pit Fighter is almost nothing now that Street Fighter is king of the hill.
The game play was slow and it always seemed that the enemy was faster than your character, so you had to adopt a hit and run technique to beat the other fighters.

Salamander, to the uninitiated, was (and probably still is) one of the hottest arcade hits of the past couple of years.
Salamander, the coin-op, stood out because of its snazzy graphics, mega-music, and a wonderful simultaneous double player option.
Take away the original's fabby graphics, ignore the musical qualities, convert it into a one player (at a time) game, and don't forget to reduce the rip-snorting action to a pitiful snail's pace.
