		Salamanderfish survive desiccation of their habitat by burrowing into bottom sand where they are moistened by ground water.

		The salamanderfish, Lepidogalaxias salamandroides (Galaxiidae, Teleostei) is endemic to southwestern Australia and inhabits shallow, freshwater pools which evaporate during the hot summer months.
		As part of a large study of the visual adaptations of this unique species, the retinal and lenticular morphology of the aestivating salamanderfish is examined at the level of the light and electron microscopes.
		The inner retina is highly vascularised by a complex system of vitreal blood vessels, while the outer retina receives a blood supply by diffusion from a choriocapillaris.

		This monotypic family is composed of the bizarre salamanderfish, Lepidogalaxias salamandroides, which is found only in the southwest corner of Western Australia in pools and streams on heathland peat flats between the Blackwood and Kent Rivers, a distance of about 180 km centered on the village of Northcliffe.
		This species has an elongate, slender, scaled body and a blunt head.
		It may turn out to be a very ancient lineage.
