Pimentel recalled that the late MILF chairman and founder Hashim Salamat, whom he met at the former Camp Abubakar in Maguindanao in 1999, fully endorsed the creation of a Bangsamoro Federal State as a pragmatic alternative to secession.
The senator from Mindanao said that the government should now seriously consider the establishment of a Bangsamoro Federal State as the centerpiece of its peace proposal if it wants to achieve a breakthrough in the conduct of peace negotiations that will result in a mutually beneficial final peace accord.
Pimentel said that the government should use the Mindanao peace talks as an opportunity to concretize President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s commitment to set in place a federal system in the country to democratize political power and to maximize its economic potentials.

But Salamat discovered her extraordinary voice after the loss of her mother when she was eleven.
Born in 1956 in the village of Batken in a remote forested region of southern Kyrgyzstan, Salamat's earliest memories include hearing her mother reading the Manas epic by candlelight.
He sings a fragment of the Kyrgyz national epic, 'Manas,' a cappella in a barrel-chested baritone with wide dramatic gestures, then plays on komuz "Ak Tamak, Kok Tamak," an instrumental showpiece as much visual as aural.

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front is an Islamic liberation movement based in the Bangsamoro region in Mindanao and the neighbouring islands.
The leader of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front,  Hashim Salamat, comes from an upper class Maguindanaon family and studied at the prestigious Islamic Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
However, the Philippine government estimates put the MILF strength at something between 8,000 and 15,000.  The majority of the MILF’s forces are deployed in four provinces of Mindanao: Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, and North Cotabato.

Ustadz Salamat Hashim, chair of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), sent four representatives to the BangsaMoro Congress convened by Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) chair Nur Misuari in Silangkan, Sulu during the weekend, to deliver a letter for Nur.
The "unity agreement" was concurred in and supported by delegates to the BangsaMoro Congress during a plenary session last Sunday.
