Gustave Flaubert : Salammbo : Chapter III. Salammbo
Salammbo ascended to the terrace of her palace, supported by a female slave who carried an iron dish filled with live coals.
Salammbo looked at the polar star; she slowly saluted the four points of heaven, and knelt down on the ground in the azure dust which was strewn with golden stars in imitation of the firmament.
Salammbo walked to the edge of the terrace; her eyes swept the horizon for an instant, and then were lowered upon the sleeping town, while the sigh that she heaved swelled her bosom, and gave an undulating movement to the whole length of the long white simar which hung without clasp or girdle about her.

Four Fat Chicks -- Salammbo: Battle for Carthage Review
It's a love story about Salammbo, daughter of the great Carthaginian general Hamilcar, and Matho, a Libyan mercenary, in the time of the fall of Carthage to the Roman Empire.
Salammbo the game deviates considerably from Flaubert's original work but at heart it is still the story of the love between Salammbo and Matho, the rivalry between Matho and fellow warrior-chief Narr'Havas for Salammbo's attention, and how a once-great city-state was sacrificed so that Matho and Salammbo might finally be together.
Salammbo promises to help Spendius out of Carthage if he will agree to take a message to Matho, a mercenary camped outside the city.

 Mucha, Alphonse - EM24 - Salammbo - Incantation
"Salammbo was the daughter of Hamilcar, the barbaric ruler of Crathage; in 1862, Gustave Flaubert wrote a romantic novel with her as a subject, in which she was searching for a magic veil (seen here trailing from her shoulder) that was supposed to aid her father in conquering the world.
The lithograph he drew for L'Estampe Moderne, 'Salammbo- L'Incantation' is an outstanding example of the finest period of his decorative style…With it's combination of an exotic richness, an overt and luxuriant sensuality, and the marvelous flowing sinuous patterns of line and colour it created a whole new era of taste" (Weston No.1 1999, 28)
"Gustave Flaubert's (French 1821-1880) 'Salammbo' written in 1862, is an often stirring mixture and intertwining of the history of the Punic Wars and of the myths held by the people of ancient Carthage....

Salammbo needs to be read as a novel; not as a work of history in order to truly understand what Flaubert intentions were.
Salammbo didn't draw me in until the last fourth, even then it wasn't moving, but that might have been Flaubert's intention (or the translator's fault); the lack of pathos or sentimentality part.
Even Salammbo herself is doomed by the very thing she wants most: she only wishes to become an initiate of Tanit, but her wish leads to her downfall.

Based on a comic, based on a book, based on a 3rd century Greek historian's account of the battle of Carthage, Phillippe Druillet's Salammbo doesn't really offer anything new as far as gameplay is concerned, but packages some tried and true adventure gaming into a game that looks amazing.

I was drawn to this game because I so much loved Druillet's original SALAMMBO "bandes dessinee", which were published in France by Dargaud, roughly between 1982-94.
The reason I have never understood those games is that despite their often breath-taking graphics, most of them had less of a plot than your average first-person shooter.
Salammbo is loosely based on historical events that occurred during the Punic Wars.
