"Facing the Wind" by Julie Salamon - Salon
Salamon had begun researching "Facing the Wind" before Rowe's death, but by her own account she procrastinated in her attempts to interview him until it was too late.
In a sense this is perfectly appropriate, since despite Salamon's subtitle (which bears the mark of the marketing division, if you ask me) this is not a tale of redemption but an enigmatic tragedy, fundamentally unknown and unknowable.
Yet it never seems clear, in Salamon's thorough and cautious account, whether Rowe achieved genuine understanding or remorse regarding his actions or was simply intelligent and resourceful enough to outwit the mental-health bureaucracy.

Johns Hopkins professor Lester Salamon, editor of The State of Nonprofit America (2002) and noted researcher on the scope and character of nonprofits’ work in the US and many other countries around the world, was in Seattle on October 30 and 31for a visit organized by Executive Alliance.
Talking about the financing and strengthening of nonprofits, Salamon suggested that the basis for tax-exemption (and tax deductions) might be shifted from organizations to activities -- adapting the logic of “unrelated business income tax” as a vehicle for encouraging careful thought about the tough issues of community and public benefit for each of program activities.
Thanking Lester Salamon at the end of the forum, Mike Heinisch, chair of the Executive Alliance, commented that the discussion had confirmed for him the strength of the theme in the communications plan the group has been working on.

Salamon, Sonya: Newcomers to Old Towns   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Salamon draws on richly detailed ethnographic studies of six small towns in central Illinois, including a town with upscale subdivisions that lured wealthy professionals as well as towns whose agribusinesses drew working-class Mexicano migrants and immigrants.
She finds that regardless of the class or ethnicity of the newcomers, if their social status differs relative to that of oldtimers, their effect on a town has been the same: suburbanization that erodes the close-knit small town community, with especially severe consequences for small town youth.
To successfully combat the homogenization of the heartland, Salamon argues, newcomers must work with oldtimers so that together they sustain the vital aspects of community life and identity that first drew them to small towns.
