Salazar Slytherin   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Salazar was arguably the most intelligent of the founders, skilled in almost all forms of magic (although he couldn't stand herbology -- he couldn't keep the plants alive long enough).
Salazar believed that the muggle-born children at the school were untrustworthy, favoring the students who came from old wizarding families like his own.
Salazar Slytherin's whereabouts remained unknown for the rest of his life, although every now and then somebody would report seeing him somewhere, always wearing a green cloak, and hurrying off to somewhere, as though anxious not to be seen.

The Founders Four :: Salazar Slytherin
Salazar is the second son of the primary Slytherin family in upper France, after his brother of five years his senior, Phineas.
Salazar was so obsessed that he even tested his findings and theories on himself, starting at the age of twelve, in addition to the many animals he kept around as specimens.
And consequentially, Salazar came to realise, with just a bit of dismay, that his lifelong pursuit was significantly less important if he were to lose his one and only friend to...

Salazar Slytherin is the most notorious of the four founders, and, even though his house is arguably the second most successful in Hogwarts after Gryffindor, he is always instinctively spoken of last when the four founders are mentioned.
Slytherin has left two relics that we know of: a fl-stoned signet ring and a locket emblazoned with his serpent mark, both of which were heirlooms of his last line of descendants, the Gaunts.
Slytherin and his house are symbolized by a silver serpent on green.

Salazar Slytherin - The Sugar Quill   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
I always took this to mean that Slytherin's main objection to muggle-borns was not so much blood-lines or talent, but more that, not having an alliance to the wizarding world, these muggle-borns (or their families) might betray the wizarding world, turning them in, so to speak, to the masses for condemnation.
Slytherin didn't just distrust muggle-borns, he HATED them, and was willing to kill them, as unsuspecting children.
It is entirely unsettling when you see it as a bad thing but cannot help but follow the reasoning for it so either attributing it to alien emotions or justifying the course of action becomes a way to not admit that you too are capable of doing the wrong thing.

And if the rest of the school distrusts the Slytherins' change of heart, the Slytherins will probably be bitter and resentful, causing them to continue to pick fights with the other houses, thus "confirming" to the other houses that the change isn't genuine.
I do think a part of Slytherin's bitterness has to do with the way they are raised, but I also think another reason is because of their need to fit in within their house.

Only a Parselmouth who also happened to share Slytherin's hatred of Muggle-borns would open the chamber, because only such a person would be able to and would want to.
As for the whole 'pureblood'; thing, it doesn't matter in the case of a bloodline--he has Slytherin blood that comes down to him, in a straight line from Salazar himself (a fairly close genetic tie).
