Salbutamol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Salbutamol (INN) or albuterol (USAN) is a short-acting β
Salbutamol became available in the United Kingdom in 1969 and in the United States in 1980 under the trade name Ventolin.
While salbutamol is well-tolerated, particularly when compared with previous therapies such as theophylline, like all medications there exists the potential for adverse drug reactions to occur - especially when in high doses, or when taken orally or intravenously.

 Salbutamol
Salbutamol is used in cases of bronchospasm in patients with reversible airway obstruction: mild and moderate attacks of dyspnea in patients suffering from bronchial asthma; mild and moderate bronchoobstruction in patients with chronic bronchitis and lung emphysema.
Salbutamol is a selective 2-adrenomimetic agent stimulating mainly the 2-adrenergic receptors and to a lesser extent 1-adrenergic receptors in the myocardium.
The antiasthmatic action of Salbutamol is related to the decrease of edema and mucus secretion.

Salbutamol stimulates the production of intracellular cyclic AMP, enhancing the binding of intracellular calcium to the cell membrane and endoplasmic reticulum, resulting in bronchodilation.
Clinical efficacy of nebulised salbutamol in infants under 18 months, especially very young infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia, is uncertain.
Transient hypoxaemia may occur during the administration of nebulised salbutamol and therefore it should be administered with oxygen.

Microparticles of salbutamol sulphate and salbutamol sulphate-APGs were prepared by spray dying from solution in water, using a Büchi 190 mini spray drier fitted with a 7-mm pneumatic nozzle.
Given that in each case it is salbutamol sulphate that is crystallizing, it might be assumed that the area under the curve (in J/g of salbutamol sulphate) would be the same, even if the shapes of the thermographs were different.
For salbutamol sulphate spray dried alone it is possible to observe that as soon as the powder is exposed to 75% RH, there is a rapid uptake of water up to 13% wt/wt, which is then desorbed very slowly.

Indication for salbutamol aerosol is based on clinical data and its delivery to ventilated infants is accomplished by a metered dose inhaler through the endotracheal tube (ETT) with a device (aerochamber) placed on the inspiratory tubing.
Due to lack of aerochambers direct administration of salbutamol (S) aerosol is frequent in hospitals throughout this country.
We conclude that salbutamol administered by metered dose inhaler into the ETT is effective in reducing airway resistance.

 Salbutamol
The asthma drug salbutamol is widely used by athletes, not just to prevent exercise-induced asthma but also for its supposed ergogenic properties.
A study of the effects of two doses of inhaled salbutamol compared with placebo in 12 trained non-asthmatic triathletes failed to demonstrate a significant effect on endurance performance.
One session was performed after inhalation of 200µg of salbutamol, another after an 800µg dose and a third after inhalation of placebo - the main criterion for an ergogenic effect being an increase in endurance time.

Salbutamol Turbuhaler (salbutamol) - treats emphysema, bronchial asthma and chronic bronchitis
Salbutamol sulphate belongs to a group of agents called beta-agonists (or sympathomimetics or adrenergic agonists).
It is also used to treat chronic bronchitis (inflammation of part of the lungs), emphysema and other lung diseases where bronchospasm (a narrowing of the airways in the lungs making breathing difficult) is a complicating factor.
Salbutamol binds to specific noradrenaline sites called beta -2-receptors resulting in relaxation, and hence widening, of the bronchial (lung) smooth muscle.
