Plans for the new township will be finalized as soon as the last million is paid to the village and then the whole 3000 acres are in the hands of the government.
He mentioned that there are indications of forest preserves on the 3000-acre land and that the town will be built near the road and not directly in the forest.
The convenant was an agreement between the Swedish Society for Nature and Conservation and the villages of Tafua, Salelologa and Palauli to preserve the rainforests in their villages.

Several meetings were held at Salelologa and at Apia commencing in February 2001 to negotiate amount of compensation and a delegation of matais appointed by the chiefs and orators of Salelologa represented the village during the meetings held at Apia.
On the 1st February 2002 a meeting between the village of Salelologa and the representatives of the government including the Prime Minister and the Minister was held at Salelologa.
It is not disputed that at the meeting held on the 1st February 2002 the tu’ua of the village of Salelologa accepted the government’s offer of $4 million tala as compensation and it is not disputed that the agreement was executed on the 25th March 2002.

The Supreme Court has ruled that compensation of $4 million paid by the Government to Salelologa village for 2872 acres of land is legitimate.
Justice Lesatele’s written decision said a meeting between Salelologa representatives and the Government, represented by the Prime Minister and Lands Minister, took place at Salelologa on 1 February, 2002.
He said that it was also therefore difficult to accept that the execution of the agreement was without village authorisation and that it should be set aside.

Already bulldozers have pushed roads into the 5,000 hectares (12,500 acres) of the Tafua Peninsula rain forest reserve on the lush southeastern coast of Samoa's largest island, Savai'i.
They now want to start flattening 1,200 hectares (3,000 acres) of the forest as it prepares to build a new town and port at Salelologa, presently the sleepy ferry terminus for boats from 'Upolu where the capital, Apia, is situated.
In 1990, as loggers moved through Savai'i rich forests SSNC signed a covenant with the matai of Tafua, Faala and Salelologa on the peninsula.

The first container ship to call into the port of Salelologa in Samoa on the island of Savaii yesterday (Sun 22), grounded on the approach to the wharf.
The vessel was due to dock to mark the Savaii wharf becoming an international port.
The Minister of Works and Transport, Faumuina Tiatia, told the Samoa Observer that the vessel was timed to arrive during high tide however it arrived late when it was already low tide.

Samoa’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment says the valuation of customary lands has disrupted the government’s plans to develop Salelologa on Savaii.
The Government has returned more than a thousand hectares of customary land in Salelologa which it had originally intended as the site of a new town and a National Park.
But the Ministry’s chief executive Tu’uu Ieti Taulealo says landowners are taking the government to court to settle the value of 200 hectares of land it has retained.

Timed to connect to the ferries between the two islands, they depart Apia on Upolu and Salelologa on Savai'i at 8am and circle each island, clockwise on Upolu, counterclockwise on Savai'i.

The Samoa Observer reports that the government is now seeking to have a 16 million US dollar compensation claim by the villagers over the land struck out.
A proclamation by the Head of State acquiring 12 hundred hectares for the establishment of a new town Salelologa has been annulled.
Toailoa says the Salelologa chiefs intend to continue with their claim for fair compensation for the land which government has retained.

APIA (Tala Nei News) - The government paid SA$4 million in compensation for 2,872 acres to Salelologa village, but nearly all of the acreage had been awarded to a single family in the village by the Lands and Titles Court in 1966, according to a legal claim filed in court.
The claim was filed by Pauli Taulapapa Wong Kee who said that Lands and Titles had awarded more than 2,700 acres of the land to his mother, Peti Taulapapa, according to Samoa Observer newspaper.
A sub-village of Salelologa, Sakalafai, is appealing the government's takeover of the 2,872 acres and is asking for SA$45 million in compensation.
