Botany Photo of the Day: Salicornia virginica and Cuscuta salina
Salicornia depressa happens to be the focal point of my master's work in plant ecology.
at September 25, 2006 05:03 PM Actually, Salicornia is usually far from drab in the marshlands here near Monterey (California), during spring and summer the pickleweed is green, with a few blushes of red, but in fall, the tips turn a deep red, changing the entire look of the marsh.
Salicornia is just about the only plant which stabilizes the slough banks as it is about the only thing that will grow in the brackish mud.

Glasswort - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The glassworts comprise the genus Salicornia of succulent, salt tolerant plants that grow in salt marshes, on beaches, and among mangroves.
Burnt glasswort was used as a source of soda for glassmaking.
Salicornia species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including the Coleophora case-bearers C.

Salicornia cultivation abandoned -DAWN - Business; 05 January, 2004
Salicornia's bio mass provides high protein - about 40 percent, forage for livestock, pulp from its straw can be used for producing coarse paper, laminated sheets as water proof roofing in construction of houses and for weaving mattresses.
Meanwhile, the Indian government undertook experimental cultivation of salicornia on 125 hectares on the coastal wasteland of Kutch district in Gujrat state with a view to generating economic activities in areas largely comprising a starkly poor population and providing employment to the rural population.
Pakistan's brief excursion in the promotion of salicornia had identified some of the possible economic benefits from the plant with the export of two tons of its tips to France where they were used as 'base for serving prawns in restaurants'.

Saudi Aramco World : Samphire: From Sea to Shining Seed (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Salicornia is a member of the halophyte (literally "salt plant") family, and Halophyte Enterprises Inc. (HEI), based in Phoenix, Arizona, is managing the project for Behar.
Although 100 tons of this year's Salicornia crop were baled as forage for dairy herds, and Behar is exploring the possibility of air-shipping the crunchy green tips of Salicornia to wholesalers in France as samphire salad-makings next year, the "real value" of the project lies in oilseeds, says Bushnak.
Salicornia straw, left after the seeds are removed, has also proved an acceptable feed source, though it is relatively high in salt and low in protein.

One such plant is called salicornia, and this plant is being developed as a crop for lands in the Middle East that are usually considered sterile on account of their high salt content (up to 30 per cent).
Alternatively, the seeds of salicornia can be crushed for vegetable oil, the way we do for soya beans in North America, although the straw that remains is not very high in feed value.
The salicornia hay required soaking in seawater before feeding, in order to wash out some of the excess salt which the salicornia plant concentrates (it's ash after burning almost half salt).

salicornia appears to be displacing native species, state and federal managers have generated an interest in developing mitigation strategies to control its abundance.
The goals of this study were to assess the feasibility of manual removal by determining the man-hours required to clear plots of differing cover and habitat type.

CC:INFO/AIJ: ProjectSalicornia: Halophyte Cultivation in Sonora
Project Salicornia is Phase I of a two-phase project to cultivate a native halophyte (a salt-tolerant euphorb plant, Salicornia bigelovii) in a coastal desert region of northwest Mexico.
Salicornia bigelovii is a native halophyte, which can be irrigated with sea water and is ideally suited for cultivation in desert or near-desert, coastal regions.
To prevent the spread of Salicornia beyond the intended cultivation area, the Salicornia crops will be planted on abandoned agricultural fields that do not receive water naturally either from waves or storms that come inland from the coast.

Modification of Tidal Flat and Salicornia Marsh Animal Communities by Invasion of a Spartina Hybrid in San Francisco Bay, Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
In San Mateo, where the hybrid is invading Salicornia habitat, the effects are limited, probably because of a more complex interplay between plant interactions (competition) and physical conditions.
In San Lorenzo and Alameda (Elsie Roemer) where the hybrid is invading tidal flat habitat, modification of physical conditions is greater and the biotic consequences are stronger.

SAC selection - 1310 Salicornia and other annuals colonising mud and sand
This pioneer saltmarsh vegetation colonises intertidal mud and sandflats in areas protected from strong wave action and is an important precursor to the development of more stable saltmarsh vegetation.
There are over 2,300 ha of Salicornia and other annuals colonising mud and sand in the UK, and it is widespread in the saltmarshes of England and Wales.
However, the area of the habitat type is restricted in Scotland and Northern Ireland because of a lack of new sediment for saltmarsh development.

Hexane-defatted salicornia meal was extracted sequentially with 0.5 M sodium chloride (2x), water, 70% ethanol, and 0.1 N sodium hydroxide (2x).
Each sodium chloride extract was dialyzed against deionized water and centrifuged to separate water-soluble fraction (albumin) from salt-soluble fraction (globulin) before freeze drying.
Nitrogen solubility of defatted salicornia meal from pH 2 to 11 indicated a minimum solubility of 22% around pH 4.5.

Many species of the genera Salsola, Suaeda and Salicornia belonging to Chenopodiaceae are rich in soda and were formerly much employed in making both soap and glass, hence the name Glasswort.
On the introduction of Le Blanc's process of obtaining soda from common salt, the importance of Barilla as an article of commerce ceased.
Our native plant, the Jointed Glasswort (Salicornia herbacea, Linn.), was, as its name implies, also regarded as of value in the manufacture of glass.

Vegetation of this association tends to develop in shallow depressions within high salt marshes where drainage is poor.
Total vegetative cover is variable in pannes, from near total absence of vascular plants to a dense cover of Salicornia virginica, Salicornia bigelovii, Salicornia maritima, or Spartina alterniflora (short form).
