La Scultura Italiana - La saliera di Benvenuto Cellini   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)

Both La Saliera and Perseus with the Head of Medusa are sculpted very carefully with the tiniest detail, such as the muscles in the human body, attended to.
Again, as with La Saliera and David, the outlines of the muscles of the human body can be seen, showing the significance of the Italian Renaissance ideal of the strong, realistic human being.
As we have seen, the idea of putting thought into a creation as well as the views of the strong, proud human were a commonality of sculptors during the Italian Renaissance.

This museum was "conceived as a memorial to Habsburg patronage and was designed in the style of the Italian Renaissance, establishing the spirit of Historicism as a link with a special significance for the arts and sciences ("Kunsthistorisches Vienna")." Cellini's saltcellar has remained in the museum since its opening.
It is interesting to note that during World War II there was speculation that through the Nazi plundering of artwork in Europe, La Saliera had been confiscated and stored in crates in the basement of the Golden Lion Inn in Austria.
The second discord of the story is that the museum guards claim all the glass is from the case and that the window was already broken, which gives justification to why the alarms did not sound when the thieves entered.

Now that we know where La Saliera came from and what has happened to it during its lifetime, perhaps we can ferret out a solution to where it has gone.
Because La Saliera has a very low material value but a very high artistic value, it must have been stolen by someone who purely loved art and wanted to possess this fine masterpiece.
It might be twenty or more years before this happens, but if the general public knows about this missing piece, a bell will go off in their head if they come across a trace of it.
