As mentioned before, in the history of Richardson County, Herman and Shary had a sort of tavern in Arago, which was a gathering-place for their countrymen, in 1864 and 1865.
The first performance of this kind in Saline County and probably in the state (with the exception of Omaha) was given by the Reading Society, on the farm of John M. Svoboda, about two miles from Crete.
He served two terms as county treasurer of Saline County; he was a presidential elector and nominated, although not elected, for Secretary of State, always on the republican ticket.

 Nebraska National Register Sites in Saline County
The fachwerkbau or "half-timbered" house was built in 1867-68 by Michael Witt, a native of Germany and one of the pioneer settlers near the present-day town of Friend.
The Zapadni Cesko Bratrske Jednota (Z.C.B.J.) or Western Bohemian Fraternal Association was an outgrowth of the Czech Freethinking movement, which began in Bohemia (a province in the presentday Czech Republic) in the mid-nineteenth century.
The General Association of Congregational Churches, in its first annual meeting at Fremont in 1857, resolved to "lay the foundations of a literary institution of a high order in Nebraska." Through the efforts of the local pastor and Thomas Doane, chief engineer for the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad, Doane College was established in 1872.

In the fall of 1880 he was elected County Commissioner for one term of two years, and again in 1881, was elected to the same office, which he now holds.
Was born in Sandusky County, Ohio, in 1844, going to Will County, Ill., with his parents in 1848, and in 1854 removed to Kankakee County, where he remained until 1864, when he enlisted in the Eighth Illinois Cavalry, Company A. Received his discharge at the close of the war, July 4, 1865.
His eldest son, E. F., who is associated with him, was born in Dodge County, Wis., in 1858, and commenced the study of medicine with his father in 1876, finishing his course and graduating at Cleveland in 1880; has also studied dentistry, and commenced practicing at Crete in 1878.

In the 1950's, in that cow barn in Nebraska mentioned on the Home page, I distinctly remembered Dad telling me that his father first "worked on a farm" near David City after arriving from Germany.
At the same time he pointed out the location of the farm 1/2 mile from that cow barn where his father, Henry Anton, first farmed in the Crete vicinity and where he was born on December 20, 1893.
The part of the road west from the farmyard to the county road still exists but may have been rerouted to the south where it approaches the the farmyard.

The Jindra Cemetery, laid out in 1873, was known as Maple Grove Cemetery.
It is situated on the northwest quarter of the southeast quarter of section 2, township 7, north of range 4, east of the 6th P. Saline county, Nebraska., being approximately one and one-half miles south and east of Crete.
The above forty acre tract was conveyed, November 26, 1873, by Wencl Jelinek and Annie Jelinek, his wife, to the directors of the said Maple Grove Cemetery, namely: G. Bridges, Charles Little, James Donnelly, J. Webster, and E. Wallace.
