"Nimby and the Dimension Hoppers" by Cory Doctorow
Sally had wrapped a heavy duvet around her broad shoulders like a shawl, and underneath, she wore a loose robe that hung to her long, bare toes.
Sally kept the gun trained on him, impassive, as I peeled off the sweaty carapace and bound his wrists and ankles.
Sally and I levitated out of our seats and dived behind the sofa as another hopper rolled through the door and returned fire, missing his opponent but blowing away the mosaic.

Sally sat staring at him through the blackness, and all he could see were those two icey blue eyes peering out form their shroud of black hair.
Sally still wasn’t looking in his direction, her black hair making masking her head and becoming one with the night.
Sally sat quietly, staring off into the pool of darkness.

Once Paul and Sally had departed homeward, and after the twins were in bed, perhaps he and his wife might make love.
Richard and Paul, and Elisabeth and Sally, and the kids too, were farm labourers in the mornings.
Evenings, as Sally had insisted, were for fun.

 Review of Sally
This is one of five "books" by Asimov published by Creative Education, Inc., where a single story by the Good Doctor has been put between covers all by itself, illustrated (rather well) by one David Shannon, and sent off for a younger audience to read.
The adult Asimov fan would, however, probably prefer to save $12.95 and just read the story in Nightfall and Other Stories or somewhere like that.
But it’s a good story and put in a nice format in a fashion which one hopes will lead children to reading, to reading sf, and to reading Isaac Asimov.

Isaac Asimov's Nightfall and Other Stories. The Eternal Night Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Web Site
While reading that book, I became more and more disappointed because, having read many of Asimov's masterpieces in the past, I simply knew that there were just so many other fantastic Asimov books out there to be read.
Emotional, thought provoking, enlightening, these are the kinds of stories that made Isaac Asimov famous.
Sure, there were some here and there that I thought were just OK. But, for the most part, this collection of early Asimov stories impresses and entertains, just like good science fiction is supposed to.

 asimov's - january, 2003
Asimov's starts off the new year with a solid offering of interesting, thoughtful, and compelling stories.
Popkes layers on many aspects of life: work, relationships, family, parenthood, tragedy, success, and ends up telling -- in his own quiet way -- a story that is very much more than just about cloning.
My favorite of the lot was Steven Popkes' "The Ice," but Nancy Kress' "The War on Treemon" was also top shelf stuff.

 Amazon.com: Books: Robot Visions
I like Asimov generally, but Susan Calvin has got to be his worst protagonist -- she's arch, acerbic, narrow-minded, and rarely bearable in any form.
The book concludes with brief essays offering companionable commentary on the history of robots in fiction, the Frankenstein complex, the origin of Asimov's famous Three Laws and the author's own surprise at the emergence of robots during his lifetime.
Robot Visions is actually the better of the two, showing a little more variety in the stories and a little more creativity (as if you could imagine Isaac Asimov being anything but creative).

 Books by Isaac Asimov
Asimov created the three laws of robotics -- that a robot would never harm a human being, by its inaction never cause a human being harm, and that it should look out for its own survival.
Despite his prodigious output, Asimov is best known for his earlier works, and it's a good place to start.
His entry into the best-seller charts assured that Asimov would write a sf book or two a year for the rest of his life -- mostly expanding the universes he created in his youth.

They also include non-robot stories, and they both start with good introductions by Asimov about his background, both as a writer and as the creator of the three laws of robotics.
Both are, ostensibly, collections of Asimov's justly famous robot stories, but that's not all.
Dreams includes the two stories Asimov has variously listed as his favorites: "The Last Question" and "The Ugly Little Boy.
