The daughter of screen actress Margaret Field (later known as Maggie Mahoney), who played leads in B pictures of the late 40s, and the stepdaughter of actor Jock Mahoney, she attended the Columbia Pictures acting workshop and was selected over 150 other candidates to play the title role in the TV seried, "Gidget" (1965-66).
Dramatic and comic lead who matured from a bubbly TV teenager to a determined everywoman in American films.
Her success led to a starring role in the even more popular series "The Flying Nun" (1967-70).

Sally managed to finish high school, but early on it was clear she would follow in her parents' thespian footsteps, and she soon got the lead role in the 1965 TV series "Gidget", quickly followed by "The Flying Nun" which ran from 1967-1970.
But Sally didn't altogether abondon her comedic side and proved this by starring opposite Burt Reynolds in the two "Smokey And The Bandit" films.
