Early classes of submarine were designated by a letter such as A,E,H,K,M,N,O, and R. In 1908 submarines were used to defend the Philippines.
In 1916 the first submarine used for operations with the fleet was constructed, the S Class submarine.
L Class submarines were used to defend Allied shipping from German U-boats during World War I. World War II During the 1930s the Electric Boat Co. built the Salmon Class submarine that proved to be effective for long range patrols.

 USS Salmon
Salmon, the second of a class of two radar-picket submarines and the largest and most powerful conventional-powered submarines in the United States Navy, conducted her shakedown cruise between 19 February and 10 May 1957, ranging from Newport, R.I., to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Salmon was the first submarine to earn a Golden "E" and was to better that record by winning hashmarks signifying retention of that status during 1963 and 1964.
Salmon's fifth deployment to the western Pacific was from 20 March to 4 October 1967.

The Victor class (Russian name Type 671 Shchuka (Pike) is the general NATO classification for a type of nuclear-powered submarine that was originally put into service by the Soviet Union around 1967.
Quieter than previous Soviet submarines, these ships had 2 tubes for launching SS-N-21 or SS-N-15 missiles and Type 53 torpedoes, plus another 4 tubes for launching SS-N-16 missiles and Type 65 torpedoes.

These submarines were extremely large by standards of the day (about three times the size of an S boat), slow on the surface, slow on the dive and difficult to maneuver.

Following this class shortly was the first class of "fleet submarines", designed as large vessels with high endurance and speed to support the battlefleet.
The next class, the T-class, was already the prototype for the Gato/Balao class, and these two classes, barely distuinguishable after the refits, would be the primary tools of the US submarine force to destroy the Japanese merchant navy.

SALMON returned to San Diego on 20 December and became flagship of SubFlot1; and, in addition to that distinction, was awarded the Golden "E" for excellence in battle efficiency for the past five consecutive years, which rated her as the leading submarine of her division.
In 1992 SALMON was converted to a shallow water sonar target and sunk near Hudson Canyon, south of Long Island as a bottom target on 5 June 1993 and remains there to this day.

As individual boats the U Class lagged behind contemporary designs in other navies in terms of speed, range, armament etc and the layout, designed for unarmed boats, was more cramped than most other classes in the war.
The V class were a modification of the U design, but being of partly welded construction they were able to dive deeper.
Four of the class operated in the Mediterranean, three of which (Virtue, Vivid and Vigorous) went on to operate in the Far East in 1944/45, though they must have been the most uncomfortable of all naval vessels in that area, due to the extreme humidity.

The majority are fleet-type submarines, but a number of older type boats also served, mostly in training and rear-area billets, though many of the S-Boats saw combat, and a number of R-Boats were employed on patrols in low activity areas.
There are gaps in some of the number sequences, either because the boats were canceled before commissioning, or because, while ordered and laid down during the war, they weren't commissioned until after 2 September 1945 and thus did not see actual service during World War II.

The S class was a medium sized patrol submarine, designed with the proposed international restriction of 600 tons displacement in mind.
Intended for use in north European or Mediterranean waters, they were highly manoeuvrable and fast diving with a heavy armament of torpedoes.
Some boats were partially welded and the later ones fully welded construction, improving the strength of the pressure hull and consequently increasing their diving depth.
