Good catches of hatchery-origin, wild broodstock winter steelhead were reported in the Wilson River during February, and success on these fish is expected to be good through March if river levels cooperate.
The Drift Creek-Siletz River, Drift Creek-Alsea River, Yachats River, Cummins Creek, Tenmile Creek and Big Creek, south of Tenmile Creek, are providing good opportunities for catch and release of wild winter steelhead.

For both Chambers Creek/lower Columbia River mix of early spawning steelhead hatchery stocks and the Eagle Creek NFH stock (also known as Clackamas River ODFW stock # 19), this conclusion is based on the substantial inclusion of original broodstock from outside the ESU and on significant deviation in current run-timing compared with native winter-run steelhead.
River entry ranges from August through June, and spawning from December through April, with peak spawning in January in the larger basins and late February and March in the smaller coastal basins.
Summer-run steelhead are native to the Hood, Lewis, Washougal and Kalama Rivers in this ESU.

The upper rivers are good for hatchery trout and crawfish and used to be good for searun cutthrout trout.
The Salmonberry is now catch and release for steelhead and single barbless hooks must be used any time, and no bait may be used during trout season.
The river was about 70 degrees at Nehalem and got colder the closer you got to the ocean, being about 56 degrees still in sight of Wheeler, but down the bay a ways.

The lower river re-opens to catch and keep sturgeon fishing on May 1st but early indications are that the fish are not present in any great numbers.
The river will re-open to fin-clipped salmon and steelhead on the 1st of May. It is projected that only 30% of the springers will be clipped so expect to weed through a few fish before you start finding those clipped salmon.
The rivers experienced a slight rise to bring in a few fresh fish but the rivers are still rather low.

Cold, high flows and sudden increases in river levels will diminish the intensity of the hatches and dull the appetite of trout.
To avoid the second mistake, move more slowly along the river; the water is not fast, so it's hard to spot feeding fish unless you slow down and scan the water carefully.
The Mohawk River is a major tributary, entering below Hayden Bridge, and we are now reporting its level; check for sudden increases before you go--you might want to stay above the Mohawk's confluence with the McKenzie.

Another picture of a salmonberry; you can see some of the few thorns that it has caught by the sun.
The trail actually continued up to a bridge between the two falls, but the trail had a fair number of people on it, so we ducked off of it and headed for the river instead.
A fallen tree by the river had been worn smooth by the water running near it.

At 9:02 AM I boarded the Red River on what was the longest passenger train ever handled on the POTB.
The Tolani, Echo Canyon, Arizona, St Paul Pass coaches were brought over from Portland to Banks on a special train after they finished their service on the Western Star Steam Special to Wishram the day before by the Willamette Pacific Railroad.
The passengers were served their box lunches as we passed through Tunnels 28 and 29 crossing the small creeks in between.

 Oregon Fishing Report
Tyler's 18 pound fish was fl faced indicating a Columbia River bound springer versus the "snow-belly" salmon destined for the Willamette River.
The "big" river, namely the South Fork of the Nehalem may give up the best opportunity in years for that once in a lifetime bruiser that is bound for the Salmonberry River.
This is always the last river to clear and is most likely fishable now but may improve as the weekend nears.

Paddlers have been running the main stem of the Salmonberry for years, but few have explored the headwaters of this wild and remote river.
Once on the river we soaked up the scenery for the first quarter mile or so, but as the intensity of the rapids increased we spent less time looking around and more time peering downstream.
