The Bevis Frond - PopMatters Concert Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Despite Saloman's musical and philosophical roots in the '60s there's a sense in which his work is also grounded in the DIY ethos that grew out of punk in the late '70s.
While Saloman's chief influences are the likes of Hendrix, Cream, early Pink Floyd, the Beatles, and the Byrds, his skill as a songwriter enables him to draw on musical leitmotifs from the past and to render them in such a way that his work never appears dated.
Although Saloman noted that all of his songs deal with one of three topics (the '60s; aging and disillusionment; or the poor treatment of women by men), his performance of "On a Liquid Wheel", "It Won't Come Again", and "This Corner of England" suggested that the first two categories blend together.

The Bevis Frond is Londoner Nick Saloman, an artist of singular vision whose staunch devotion to the spirit of vintage psychedelia has yielded a shelf full of unmistakably '60s-derived albums.
A decade after the original Acid Jam, Saloman and 18 members of the Woronzow Records family convened for another session, Acid Jam 2; while Saloman's Bevis Frond albums of the period were becoming more song-oriented, this double CD proved he was still given to heavyweight guitar-centric workouts.
Saloman also contributed to and co-produced Inexactness by Tony Hill (formerly of the Misunderstood and High Tide) and appeared on Adrian Shaw's string of neo-psychedelic solo albums (Tea for the Hydra, Displaced Person, Head Cleaner and Look Out).

 VH1.com : Bevis Frond : Biography
The head of his own label (Woronzow) as well as the co-publisher of his own underground magazine (the highly regarded Ptolemaic Terrascope), Saloman was a quintessential English eccentric, a frighteningly prolific talent and a true anachronism purveying an archaic musical genre while simultaneously pioneering the lo-fi aesthetic.
Saloman cloaked his formative years in mystery; according to legend, he formed his first band, the Bevis Frond Museum, during his school years, and after the group disbanded he performed solo acoustic sets throughout the London area known as Walthamstow.
Beginning with 1990's Any Gas Faster, Saloman was secure enough financially to begin recording in an outside studio; as the new decade dawned, he also made his live debut, appearing sporadically with an ever-changing group of backing musicians.

What's more, the record is Saloman's first studio release in years that includes touring band Andy Ward and Adrian Shaw, whose instrumentation on last year's live Frond record proved them more than technically proficient.
Both of these records are testaments to Saloman's sick talents both as a guitarist and a songwriter, chock full of insanely catchy melodies, air-tight grooves, and enough heavy riffage to keep a Sabbath fan satiated.
Saloman also demonstrated a knack for penning compelling organ-driven ballads, as well as the occasional 10-minute anti-corporation/music critic rant.

Various Artists: Acid Jam 2 - PopMatters Music Review
In 1988, Nick Saloman, the one-man epicenter of latter-day British psychedelia (co-boss of Woronzow Records, publisher of The Ptolemaic Terrascope and brains behind The Bevis Frond) herded a hand-picked bunch of collaborators into a converted pigsty near London's Heathrow Airport.
The former is punctuated by changes in tempo and suffused with guitar pyrotechnics and swelling Hammond organ, while the latter has the weary, melancholy timbre of Saloman's vocals underscored by beautifully pained guitar solos.
But while, from the perspective of the early 21st century, classic psychedelic rock is often disappointing to me, the present CD gives us an idea of what the form might have sounded like, or perhaps even did sound like, to those who were listening to it the first time around.

The Bevis Frond: New River Head: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Sort of a J Mascis type (he even has the hair!), the British multi-instrumentalist writes all The Bevis Frond's material; he sings and plays just about every instrument on his albums, engineers and produces them, and then releases them on his and Adrian Shaw's Woronzow label, named after a street near where he grew up.
In concert, Saloman handles guitar and vocals while Shaw takes the bass; a rotating lineup of drummers-- which on any given day might include Andy Ward (ex-Camel and Marillion) or Joe Propatire (The Silver Apples)-- expand the percussion outward.
Some are less interesting than others, sure, but each is at least somewhat compelling due to Saloman's inclination to forever fuck with psychedelic conventions and tackle diverse genres without a hitch.
