JewishEncyclopedia.com - ALEXANDRA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
That Alexandra, the widow of Aristobulus I., was identical with her who married his brother Alexander Jannæus, is nowhere explicitly stated by Josephus, who no doubt took it for granted that the latter performed the levirate marriage prescribed by the law for the widow of a childless brother deceased.
Alexandra does not seem to have been able to prevent the cruel persecution of that sect by her lord; nevertheless the married life of the royal pair seems to have been a happy one, and on his deathbed Alexander entrusted the government, not to his sons, but to his wife.
Alexandra installed as high priest her eldest son, Hyrcanus II.—a man wholly after the heart of the Pharisees—and the Sanhedrin was reorganized according to their wishes.

Salome was queen; Hyrcanus II, the elder of her two sons, was high priest; but the Pharisees held the real power, according to Josephus.
In contrast, the association of this unit with Salome Alexandra, for example, by Flusser and Amusin, would require the pesher to depart from the apparent biblical context of these verses, the downfall of the powerful subject.

 Josephus' Lineage
There is no good reason to question Josephus' report that his own father, Matthew, was born in the last year of Archelaus' reign [6 CE].
But in order for this Matthew to be the son of a Joseph who was born in the last year of Queen Salome's reign [68 BCE], the father would have been 74 years old when he sired a son.
While not beyond biological credibility, it is more likely that at least one or, more likely, two generations were dropped in Josephus' hasty recounting of his family's history at the beginning of his apologetical autobiography.
