If Mr and Mrs Average are after a car, one which has had great success in championship racing is going to stick much longer in the mind than a car which has not.
Saloon car racing came of age in the 60s when real championships were set up for professional drivers in sophisticated technological masterpieces.

Last year was the first time this series was run and it was very successful with 12-14 cars traveling around the three southern speedway tracks twice competing to find an overall winner.
With the close competitive cars and the way the point structure worked, it was not certain until the final chequered flag, who would be crowned the champ.
There were 2 no shows for the repercharge 63w and 5W (who was saving himself for the NZ mods at Woodford Glen the following weekend.) The repercharge was a site to behold it took at least 30 minutes and involved the orange lights coming on at least 8 times.

John Warren a Ford dealer and good racer and car preparer wanted to enter a Scopio with the Cosworth V6 engine, only trouble is from the factory they only came with an auto trans unlike the standard 2.8 that came with a manual.
You must have sensible flexability and I would suggest you have a basic set of rules like you have in the ModProds but invite people to enter with declared mods that they would like to do then decide if you think they are OK or not but be fair and flexable.
Very few regs, good diversity of cars to race against, big grids, lots of track time with the 40 minute races and a chance to share the car and split the costs.

Given that touring cars are supposed to use production shells and other bodywork is it also the result of the manufacturers having smaller frontal areas?
If I remember correctly,this design helps to keep the downforce level at the front of the car constant even when the front goes down under braking,wich would normally cause huge variations in downforcelevel.
