During Pippa's recent trip to The Gambia she visited Saloum Nursery School and was delighted to see that work on the toilet block is under way.
Ian and Pippa set off from the Atlantic Hotel to visit Saloum Nursery school, together with Helen (whose family sponsors Fatou), and Lorna, a UK teacher who was keen to visit some schools.
We had arranged to meet Vic and Jackie Edwards at Saloum, as they were keen to see the changes made at the little school they had introduced us to, just a year ago.

The Kingdom of Saloum in Senegal is a traditional kingdom which was founded in the late 15th century by the "Gelwaar" or nobles from the Kingdom of Gaabu to the south.
The original population was overrun by the Serer in the 11th century, arriving from the Kingdom of Tekrur[?] in the Senegal River Valley in the North.
Saloum is known for its many ancient burial mounds or "tumuli" containing the graves of kings and others.

There was no French school in Sine Saloum when Yandé was growing up, and as a girl she was obliged to stick by her mother, following her everywhere, including to the endless string of local social ceremonies where griottes were responsible for entertainment.
All of Sine Saloum’s most respected griots and griottes were present, but Yandé’s performance evidently was the revelation of the evening.

L’échec économique et social de ce régime étant une des causes, « Buur Saloum » comme Sékou Touré, oublia que le processus irrationnel s’établit au niveau de l’exercice du pouvoir.
