Salsola - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Salsola (Saltwort*, Tumbleweed or Russian thistle) is a genus of herbs, subshrubs, shrubs and small trees in the family Amaranthaceae, native to Africa, Asia, and Europe.
Amusingly, tumbleweed is such a common symbol in Westerns, where it is used to indicate an abandoned area, that it is generally associated with the American Old West, despite its Russian origin.
Salsola species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including The Nutmeg and the Coleophora case-bearers C.

Salsola soda - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
'Salsola soda', more commonly known as Opposite Leaved Saltwort, Barba di Frate (Italian), Agretti roscana (Italian) or Liscari sativa is an edible species of the Genus 'Salsola'.
It is a small shrub 12" to 18" tall when mature and typically grows in saline soils and locations.
Barba Di Frate is sometimes confused with a Japanese strain called Okahijiki (Salsola komarovi) or "Land Seaweed", as photos of the harvested produce appear almost identical.

Salsola in Flora of North America @ efloras.org
It is evident that Salsola in the traditional sense should be regarded as a group of genera rather than a natural monophyletic genus.
The study confirmed that Salsola sensu lato is polyphyletic, with several currently recognized related genera rooted within the group.
A comparative taxonomic and phytogeographic analysis (S. Mosyakin 2002) also suggests the place of origin of the Salsola generic aggregate is somewhere in the Tethyan region of south-central Asia (probably northern coasts of the ancient Tethys, or adjacent inland lacustrine habitats).

'Salsola soda' or 'Salsola komarovi'? - UBC Botanical Garden Forums
In general, Salsola soda is the larger plant - it's taller, its seeds are longer and its leaves are longer.
There is yet another salsola I may as well include for identification and clarification, Salsola Kali, located here and I believe to be mislabeled.
As for the plant labelled Salsola kali, it doesn't appear to be "densely covered with brittle bristles", which it is described as being in Flora Europaea.

Salsola paulsenii Pallas is not known definitely from New Mexico, but a few specimens may represent hybrid derivatives or intermediates suggestive of this species.
Salsola collina Pallas was first reported for the state by Mosyakin in 1996, but a search of herbarium specimens revealed the earliest collection of this species to be in 1952 from the Sacramento Mountains in Otero County, though it was not correctly identified until this review was undertaken.
Uncertainty about the identity of Salsola species is presaged by a profusion of names and synonyms, at least for the common Russian thistle plant found throughout the state (Table 1).
