The Salton Sea is an inland saline lake, located in the Colorado Desert in Southern California, north of the Imperial Valley.
By the 1960s, it was becoming apparent that the salinity of the Salton Sea was continuing to rise, jeopardizing some of the species living in it.
Since that time, the Salton Sea Authority has developed a preferred concept [2] that involves the construction of a large dam that would impound water to create a marine sea in the northern and southern parts of the sea and along the western edge.

The current challenge is to ensure that any rehabilitation plan for the Salton Sea ecosystem is ecologically and financially feasible, rehabilitates and preserves avian habitat in and around the Sea, and that it also protects human health in the Imperial and Coachella valleys by limiting the exposure of lake sediments to wind.
The broader challenge is to maintain pressure on the state and federal agencies responsible for the health of the Salton Sea and of the people and birds that live in the region, to ensure that these agencies fulfill their obligations, and do not divert existing and likely future funding to other projects outside the area.

Much has been reported in various news media in recent months on the condition of the Salton Sea, especially in relation to the plight of the birds and the fish that inhabit that body of water.
An effort has gotten underway to "SAVE THE SALTON SEA." Congress has recently allocated 5 million dollars to study what is causing the problems with the Salton Sea and to determine if any measures can be taken to mitigate its deterioration.
