The Conquest of Cuscatlan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-11)
Alvarado and his troops received a hero's welcome when they reached the Cakchiquel capital of Iximche that when translated to the Nahuatl language (derived from the Aztec language spoken by the natives who accompanied Alvarado from other alliances formed during the Hernan Cortes conquest of Mexico) becomes Cuauhtemallan from where the actual name Guatemala originates.
Alvarado enters the capital of Cuscatlan to his surprise the city had been abandoned thus realizing that the so called treaty offered by the Pipil was nothing more than a tactic to buy time to evacuate the city.
Alvarado reports to Cortes, deeply frustrated and in terrible physical pain because of his wound, decides to postpone the conquest of Cuscatlan and returns to Guatemala.

While Alvarado had proven his usefulness, Cortés knew better than to have the likes of him and Olid too close by; it was better to have them occupied in distant lands than to face the possibility of powerful underlings scheming in his immediate vicinity.
To appease his superior, Alvarado reverted to established patterns: the conquest of Guatemala began and operated under the guise of expanding Cortés' area of influence.
Cortés writes that Alvarado "[took] along some native nobles from this city [Mexico-Tenochtitlán] and other cities from this area and with them some people, but not many, because the distance was too great." Díaz del Castillo, an eyewitness to these events, concurs with Cortés when he places the number of native auxiliaries at three hundred.

Alvarado also is working with labor unions to improve their relations with immigrants.
Alvarado’s strategy incorporates a range of leadership tools, including organizing (building power), litigation and policy (fighting anti-day laborer ordinances and promoting legalization and fair-labor laws), education and training (creation of worker-run centers), public awareness and media (changing public perception of day laborers), as well as cultural fusion (a day-laborer band and soccer leagues).
One of Alvarado's next challenges is to create a network of allies -- including clergy members, immigrant-rights groups, labor groups, neighborhood organizations and others -- to create a stronger response to the injustices committed against day workers.

The family chose the center as recipient of the donation because all of Alvarado Sr.'s children attended school in the Riviera district.
