Salvador Novo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Salvador Novo (30 July 1904 13 January 1974) was a Mexican writer and the official chronicler of Mexico City, where he was born.
Novo was a controversial figure in 20th century Mexican society, but an accepted one.
He has been compared to Oscar Wilde, but unlike him, Novo never suffered the setback of scandal or persecution and remained an accepted and respected member of society and governmental circles until his death.

Studies in the Literary Imagination: La Pedo Embotellado: Sexual roles and play in Salvador Novo's La Estatua De Sal
Novo, one of the Contemporaneos poets who gained prominence in the years following the Revolution, was well known not only for his talents as poet, playwright, critic, and cronista, but also for his notably "queer"3 public persona.
Written in the forties and chronicling Novo's childhood and early adult life in the early twenties, these memoirs are a comingof-age narrative and a fascinating record of Mexico City's literary scene in the first years after the Revolution.
Novo describes his encounter with Fink with even greater candor: "Conscious of its gigantic size, he would introduce it cautiously limp and well coated with the lubricant of choice in those days before the meritorious advent of KY jelly: namely, vaseline.

 Hernández, Rafael
Novo is an emblematic figure of his time and its conflicts, a figure that questioned a traditional society by assuming his individuality as much as by criticizing and mocking the retrograde views of revolutionary groups.
Novo, the "bourgeois" poet, is writing assertively not from the perspective of the intellectual that looks at these people with contempt and finds their behavior "picturesque," but from the perspective of the man who does not romanticize them and sees their integrity as human beings in an unjust society.
Novo goes further and in his best satirical poetry he makes clear that not only he knows more about those sweaty, hard-working men, but also he is responsible in part for their sweat.

Studies in the Literary Imagination: Mexico City as urban palimpsest in Salvador Novo's Nueva grandeza mexicana   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The grandeur of the visual possibilities coupled with a return of the flaneur to the streets of Mexico City are at the center of Salvador Novo's Nueva grandeza mexicana (1946).
Novo's chronicle is a literary tour of Mexico City in which the narrating subject shows a friend from Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, the grandeur and magnificence of Mexico City in 1946 and, by so doing, assumes the role of observer, historian, and tour guide for the reader.
Novo's chronicle can be read as a literary attempt to restructure and reorganize the urban experience of the milagro mexicano ("Mexican miracle") into a totality.

Oropesa, The Contemporáneos Group, University of Texas Press
In this book, Salvador Oropesa offers original readings of the works of five Contemporáneos—Salvador Novo, Xavier Villaurrutia, Agustín Lazo, Guadalupe Marín, and Jorge Cuesta—and their efforts to create a Mexican literature that was international, attuned to the realities of modern Mexico, and flexible enough to speak to the masses as well as the elites.
Oropesa discusses Novo and Villaurrutia in relation to neo-baroque literature and satiric poetry, showing how these inherently subversive genres provided the means of expressing difference and otherness that they needed as gay men.
Salvador A. Oropesa is Associate Professor of Spanish at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas.

Novo gives us chatty, gay Aztecs--something of a mix between Oscar Wilde, Jean Cocteau and Jean Genet (all of whose works Novo brought to the Mexican stage).
Novo makes us laugh with the Aztecs as he did in his parodies of Rivera, which pocked fun at the artist's stolid heterosexuality.
