Burruni who was 70 years old at the time of his death conquered the world flyweight title on April 23rd 1965 in Rome Italy, by a unanimous decision in 15 rounds of action over the great Thai fighter Pone Kingpetch.
Salvatore Burruni's record of 99 pro bouts with 32 ko's and 9 defeats and 1 draw. 
Burruni was managed by Humberto Branchini of Italy.

Burruni was dominant here and seemed to be playing with Calatayud.
Calatayud won the occasional round on my card boxing behind a stiff jab, but it seemed it was because Burruni let him as the Italian stayed in second gear.
Burruni did lose 2 points for fouls during the bout which I fought was over zealous in the extreme but it made no difference to the outcome as he still won 6-3, 6-3, 7-3 on the cards.

Close to turning 71, Buruni was flyweight champion of the world from April 1965 when he outpointed Pone Kingpetch in Rome until June 1966 when dropped a decision in London against Walter McGowan.
Guided by famous manager Umberto Branchini, Burruni was one of the greatest Italian fighters of all time, reigning in an era when world champion was a status only a few enjoyed.

He took the Amateur Boxing Association flyweight title (1961) and went on to beat Jackie Brown in Paisley to take the British and Commonwealth championship (1963), again at the flyweight.
He took the World flyweight title in London (1966) beating the Italian Salvatore Burruni.
McGowan lost this title to Thailand's Chartchai Chionoi in the same year, when the referee stopped the fight.

Two late great Flyweights, Benny Lynch and Jackie Paterson (who won British, European and World titles between 1939 and 1943) entered the Hall as All Time Greats, as did another Scottish Flyweight, Walter McGowan.
McGowan, who is 62, won the World Flyweight title in 1966, beating Salvatore Burruni of Italy in London to claim the title.
Another Scottish World Champion at Flyweight, Pat Clinton, was inducted for Outstanding Achievement as was John "Cowboy" McCormack who won British, Commonwealth and European titles at Middleweight in the late Fifties and early Sixties.
