The Hapsburgs were the longest established in the Salzkammergut; their rule began in 1297 with the widow of Duke Albrecht I. She placed the extraction of salt under the authority of the imperial court chamber – and thereby provided the second building block in the name “Salzkammergut”(=Salt-Chamber-Estate).

UNESCO has declared some areas of the Salzkammergut a World Heritage Site, for example, the picturesquely situated Hallstatt, which has been inhabited since early times – historians will be familiar with the term “Hallstatt Period.” The numerous lakes significantly contribute to the breathtaking beauty of the Salzkammergut.

Salzkammergut Trophy by John Weich | Travel Reviews from Travel Intelligence
The Salzkammergut Trophy is considered the most grueling one-day mountain bike event in Europe, and perhaps maybe the world.
There are four Salzkammergut Trophy courses in all, the most renowned being the 220-kilometer martyrdom ride that boasts 21,000 feet in altitude change, earning the journey opprobriums like ‘Pain has a Name’, ‘Ticket to Hell’ and ‘To Hell and Back.’ Not even the most gruesome stages of the Tour de France come close.
For the annual Salzkammergut Trophy, which this year celebrated its sixth edition, the Inner Salzkammergut forestry service opens up trails that are otherwise inaccessible to cyclists.

This is one of the loveliest lakes in the Salzkammergut with deep blue waters.
