Sam Browne belt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Browne had lost his left arm in 1858 fighting during the Indian Mutiny, and found the contrivance useful in helping him wear his sword thereafter.
A sort of gear similar to the traditional Sam Browne belt was also popular with British and Commonwealth armed services; this consists of two vertical straps, one over each shoulder, and its invention is also sometimes attributed to Browne, although other sources say he got the idea from a saddlemaker.
After World War II the Sam Browne belt saw a decline in use in the Commonwealth; for example it was phased out by the Canadian military with the unification of the armed services in 1968.

Sam Browne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General Sir Samuel James Browne VC, GCB, KCSI (3 October 1824 - 14 March 1901) was a British Army cavalry officer in India and the Near East, best known today as the namesake of the Sam Browne belt.
Browne led the 2nd Punjab in several engagements, and was decorated for action during the Bozdar Expedition in 1857, being promoted to captain.
In an engagement with the rebels, Captain Browne, whilst advancing upon the enemy's position, pushed on with one orderly sowar upon a 9-pounder gun and attacked the gunners, preventing them from re-loading and attacking the infantry who were advancing to the attack.

Encyclopedia: Thomas Browne   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The son of a silk merchant from Upton, Cheshire, Browne was born in the parish of St Michael, Cheapside, in London on October 19, 1605.
In 1658 Browne published together two Discourses which are intimately related to each other, the first being Hydriotaphia, Urn Burial or a Brief Discourse of the Sepulchral Urns lately found in Norfolk, occasioned by the discovery of some Bronze Age burials in earthenware vessels found in Norfolk.
Browne's paradoxical place in the history of ideas is another reason why he remains little-understood; he was as much a scientist as a Christian and as much a promoter of the new inductive science as an adherent of ancient esoteric learning.

Sam Browne Belt. A full history and a controversy
Sam Browne belts are a combination of a pistol belt or garrison belt and a shoulder strap (and D-rings).
It was at about this time that the famous Sam Browne belt was to make its appearance, an item of dress to be adopted widely and surely one of the few accoutrements still to be in use 130 years later with little or no change.
Later the wearing of the Sam Browne belt (q.v) would be adopted by other officers who knew Browne in India, but it was not to come into common use in the British Army until after his retirement.
