Sam Jones: I already kind of answered this, but I will say that the moments backstage on Jeff's solo tour are a pretty dead-on imitation if not homage to some of the moments in "Don't Look Back." The harmonica doesn't hurt either.
Sam Jones: I know that he didn't feel as warm and fuzzy about it as the rest of the band, but he once said to me "a pro-Wilco movie is an anti-Jay movie," and given the circumstances, I can understand where he is coming from.
Sam Jones: Well, I had the UT records, and the early Wilco record, but it wasn't until Being There that I was really bowled over by the band.

Rolling Stone : Breaking Wilco on Film
Instead Jones found himself stuck in a year in the life of a band; one which included turnover of two members (drummer Ken Coomer left in January 2001 and guitarist/keyboardist Jay Bennett departed in the summer) and a surprising break with a label that underscores some alarming trends within the record industry.
Jones sent the band a letter in late 2000, asking if a new project was to begin soon and asking permission to be a fly on the wall during its construction.
Jones is close to cinching a deal with Plexifilm to put the film in theaters this summer, and he plans to release it on DVD by August or September.

Metroland Online - Night & Day
When first-time filmmaker Sam Jones, who spends his days photographing the glitteratti for glossy outlets like Vanity Fair, undertook to make a documentary about the band Wilco, he knew he was taking a gamble.
Jones’ cameras captured the relatively happy period of recording that followed, though tensions grew between principle songwriter Jeff Tweedy and multi-instumentalist Jay Bennett.
It’s no surprise that with his background as a professional photographer, Jones would be very careful in planning the look of the film, which was shot in fl-and-white.

12:06 PM PT Sam Jones became a very lucky filmmaker the day Wilco got dropped from their record label, Reprise (a subsidiary of AOL Time Warner), proving that one man's ruin may be another's fortune.
Jones wisely decided to stick with the band, following the story until the band, with the completed album in hand, was signed by Nonesuch Records at three times their previous price.
Jones keeps us from most of the backstage antics -- if there were any -- and the lens tends to be very kind to Tweedy, but as the Chicago Tribune's music reviewer David Fiske says in the film, "This band's story is the music" and in this respect the film doesn't disappoint.

Photographer and first-time filmmaker Sam Jones is trying to change that with his documentary "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart." Shot in grainy, fl-and-white 16 mm film, it's reminiscent of D.A. Pennebaker's "Don't Look Back," which took us behind the scenes on tour with a 23-year-old Bob Dylan in 1965.

Jones shot the film in a grainy fl & white that is a nice touch, but it would have been a good idea if he introduced a little color into the film especially in the concert footage.

Wilco is trying to break your heart
The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard albums chart, the band’s highest chart position to date, when it was finally released in April.
In an age where every episode of VH1’s "Behind the Music" shares the same carefully sanitized, thoroughly scripted three-act story arc (band rises to the top, band suffers a tragedy, band comes back from the brink), Jones lucked into a real and moving tale, he was allowed all-access permission to film it.
The movie’s other strong suit is that the conflicts the musicians faced play out in a series of very real and revealing scenes, so that Jones does not have to rely on talking-head interviews to tell the story.

In the process, filmmaker Jones, who had approached the band and begun filming long before any of the trouble started, finds himself with the chance of a lifetime: the opportunity to capture the creative peak, the partial collapse and the ultimate rise of one of the most respected and influential rock groups active today.
That Jones was actually present when band manager Tony Margherita received the call with the news that Reprise would not release the album is indicative of the impact and raw emotion the material contains.
The other members of the group are disciplined in their handling of the presence of Jones and his crew, and it is ultimately this respect and restraint that confirm the precision of the film's representation.

I actually corresponded with the filmmaker, Sam Jones, a couple of months ago after Ned turned me on to the film's website.
I was particularly interested in it because his movie, like mine, has to do with a band at a very important time in their lives and is fraught with unexpected drama.
It seems Sam had merely intended to document the recording of the latest album, not anticipating that while doing so, the band would "let go" two of its members, and their label, Reprise Records, would "let go" of them.

Tweedy agreed to let filmmaker Sam Jones spend most of 2001 with the band.
As they drove around Chicago one night discussing the project, with Tweedy playing Jones a demo of the group's upcoming album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (the film's name comes from the opening track), Jones got Tweedy to agree that "you guys don't come in the editing room, you don't tell me I can't shoot something".
Jones arrived in early 2001 to hear that Wilco had fired drummer Ken Coomer the day before, but he was there - with camera rolling - when Reprise Records called to say that Foxtrot, a melancholic tapestry of spare vocals and ambient folk-pop sounds, wasn't at all what it hoped for.

It's a problem familiar to photographer turned filmmaker Sam Jones, who spent more than a year with the Chicago band Wilco as they recorded what would be their fourth album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.
The camera wasn't always rolling but Jones became such a fixture in the corner that it didn't matter in the end as the band simply kept going with their lives.
