 NOTES from me
Yorty was mayor from 1961 to 1973 and darn near proved that L.A. could function just fine without anyone in that office.
Yorty aides combed through photos of Bradley, found every one in which the Councilman's fist was clenched (including pictures of him jogging) and published them with captions that claimed Bradley was giving a covert "Black Power" signal to his true masters.
Yorty, in a rare instance of doing something besides travelling and campaigning, had rammed through the City Council a number of proposals that enriched Occidental Petroleum.

 TIME.com: Sad Sam -- Apr. 11, 1969 -- Page 1
When he was seeking his first term in 1961, Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty insisted that "to ensure healthy democratic processes" and thwart any "self-interest group that feeds on continued control of city hall," eight years in the mayor's office should be the limit.
Yorty's greatest failure was in providing leadership for the diffuse, sprawling metropolis that was described 30 years ago as "19 suburbs in search of a city"; today there are 64 suburbs, and they are still searching.
Yorty has protested that the mayor's power is so limited he is scarcely able to govern at all.

On Wednesday Yorty was sent home on terminal care after treatments failed to improve his condition.
It was under Yorty's reign that racial tension caused Los Angeles' Watts area to erupt in flames.

If Mayor Sam Yorty danced to the bidding of the Downtown Establishment, Bradley built his base among the new rich L.A. of the Westside, influential Jewish voters of that area and voters in his own 10th District.
Yorty knew the best way to beat Tom Bradley was simply to terrorize as many white voters as he could.
Yorty linked Bradley with the 'militants' of the 'hippy-peacenik-Black-power combine.' His stampede of the conservative homeowner vote in the Valley helped him win his last term ' and lose the next election.

Hahn, Villaraigosa Exchange Increasingly Bitter Accusations
Villaraigosa would later retaliate that the city attorney was "creating a climate of fear" and engaging in the inaccurate and divisive campaigning style of the late Mayor Sam Yorty.
Villaraigosa said his comments were not intended to accuse Hahn of racial divisiveness, as Yorty tried to use race against the African American Bradley in 1969 and 1973.
But an incredulous Hahn said that comparing him to Yorty was "unbelievable" and that Villaraigosa's voting record in the Assembly is fair game in the final six weeks of the mayor's race.

Tom Bradley (politician) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Armed with key endorsements (including the Los Angeles Times), Bradley held a substantial lead over Yorty in the primary, but was a few percentage points shy of winning the race outright.
However, in the run-off, to the dismay of supporters such as Abigail Folger, Yorty pulled an amazing come from behind victory to win reelection primarily because he played racial politics.
Yorty questioned Bradley's credibility in fighting crime and painted a picture of Bradley as a threat to Los Angeles because he would open the city up to Black Nationalists.

Sam Yorty had come along the political trail as a lefty, and was even on the same political stage with Communist Dorothy Healey.
Yorty became more conservative as Mayor of Los Angeles, pro-LAPD, and by 1973 held his Wednesday afternoon weekly news conferences with a map of Vietnam behind him.
Yorty’s charges that Bradley was a “Black Nationalist,” fell on deaf ears after that support.

LA Weekly - Son of Sam
Speaking of misplaced nostalgia: The Hahn campaign seems very familiar to anyone who remembers the campaigns that Sam Yorty waged against Tom Bradley in 1969 and 1973.
The Yorty campaign played the race card more directly than the Hahn campaign, but L.A. was a different city then, and Hahn, unlike Yorty, has to take care not to overplay his hand.
The question before the Villaraigosa campaign is whether it’s the Bradley campaign of ’69 (which never did figure out a way to counter Yorty’s charges) or ’73 (which did).

Sam Yorty’s America has a parallel take to Jill Stewarts “circular firing squad of California Republican hardliners,” which we wrote about a few days ago.
Yet the state Republican party seems to be on a mission to cede this bloc to the Democrats —; a course that, given California’s demographics, is suicide.
But as Mayor Sam and Jill Stewart both observe, some would seem to prefer the Old Boy status quo — and losing election after election — to advancing candidates that actually appeal to California voters.
