Sam and Henry (also rendered as Sam 'n' Henry) was a radio show which aired in 1926 and 1927 by Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll.
As they had gotten much favorable response to some voices impersonating African American characters they had done on the radio earlier, Gosden and Correll proposed that the principle characters be African Americans (named Sam Smith and Henry Johnson) newly arrived in Chicago from the rural South.
Sam and Henry premiered on Chicago radio station WGN on January 12, 1926 and enjoyed popularity.

Henry's dream, seen just as the bounty hunters come to take him away, seems to involve Edith, with her hands in front of her face, and her face seen with fl spots where her eyes should be.
This phenomenon most obviously occurs in Claire, Sam, and Henry's obsession with their own dreams, to which Gene remarks (exclaims, even), "You're all just junkies hooked on your own dreams!" This also manages to occur however in several other, more subtle parts of the film's subtext.

Henry Willis (Sam) Barrett, 85, died Feb. 3 in Palm Desert, Calif. He served as a U.S. Marine during World War II and in the early stages of the Korean conflict in 1951.
When Maggi died in 1971, Kirk Barrett went into partnership with Sam Barrett, and bought him out in 1983.
Sam Barrett continued working for the company until 1999 when his health started deteriorating.
