		This interview with Vorph of the Swiss industrial extreme metal band Samael was done by Boris Van Berlo prior to their live performance at the Biebob in Vosselaar, Belgium on December 18th, 2004.
		This is what characterizes a great band and today, having been active for more than 15 years, they are still one of the leading European metal bands.
		It is mainly cities I visited myself with the band or personally, and to some I’ve never been, like I haven’t been to China yet, but it is appealing, I want to visit a town like Beijing.

	HISTORY
		Few bands have been able to successfully explore the darker sides of metal, and at the same time challenge and satisfy themselves as progressing musicians like Switzerland's own Samael.
		Samael's death metal roots quickly became too tight of a parameter for the band, and early albums, "Worship Him" and "Blood Ritual", only hinted at their songwriting creativity.
		Samael's goal is and always has been to free the mind from its self-centered state and let it glide into the cosmos - and they have never before managed it as successfully as with "Eternal".

	Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by metal band Samael called Reign Of Light
		I could not believe that the band that I had in front of me was the same as the one that has created songs like "Into the Pentagram", "After the Sepulture" and "Mask of the Red Death".
		Well, I have to admit that the Metal element was also there, since the band has not abandoned completely the sound that made people once refer to them as one of the gloomiest bands in Europe and also as pioneers of the Black Metal sound, but in much lower proportion than the one expected.
		It is true that my preference will always be with the band’s first releases, but that doesn’t mean that I cannot respect and appreciate a band that is not afraid to experiment with their music.

	Metal Coven - Metal Concert Review - Samael / SYL / Cathedral
		This gives Samael’s aesthetic a certain electro quality that wouldn’t be out of place on a bill with acts like Hocico, Front Line Assembly, or KMFDM, but that could present a bit more of a hurdle for a metal audience because, let’s face it, we metalheads tend to be purists.
		The show was awesome, but in hindsight it occurs to me that Samael seems unwilling to fully embrace the sonic potential that their current line-up possesses.
		One of the main reasons I have never been able to get into Samael’s later recordings is that they sound thin and antiseptic compared to the oppressive atmosphere of Ceremony, and this could be helped immensely by digging up some dirty analog sounds and some crushing gated snares, or even just layering some cool atmospherics.

		This appears to be Samael at their peak, as they have evolved with each album.
		Originally they were a very dark sounding, slower version of a fl metal band, a style which they perfected, but for this album they took on a more industrial style, using more synthesisers, and using a drum machine, both to great effect.
		Samael's latest material seems to me to be a bit difficult to listen to because they've gone for such a NIN/Ministry sound (ok maybe not that bad) but Passage is the perfect amalgam of dark metal and industrial.

		Yes there are bands on the fringes of Black / Death metal that I like such as Tristania and TSOTB but let's face it, except for the male growling they are sort of Gothic, almost Operatic.
		But Samael is closer to (but not that close) to Black Metal, however one could swear that in this album they are trying to make a transition to another genre.
		It appears that Samael, who started out performing in the Black/Death metal sub-genres, found their Black/Death metal roots to restrictive for their immense talents, hence their steady progression to less extreme venues.

		As has been the case on the last couple of SAMAEL releases this CD is a clash of worlds.
		The band's bio is so bold as to claim this synthesis as dialectical thus implying it will elevate into its own thesis, that is rise to be a new standard that will only be changed by the clash of new opposition born solely as a reaction.
		No longer is it surprising to hear a CD with the dynamics of "Eternal" which from a marketing standpoint is probably a good thing since a niche has been permanently carved but from an artistic standpoint this may not be good news for the genre.

		When the first band started to play, a Russian band called Slot, there were only 80 or so people in the place.
		Say the name of your band 4 or 5 times during the set if you have to, but don't "support" (that is, in metal terminology, to wear a T-shirt with a band name) your own band.
		Samael's set lasted for about 80 minutes with the most emphasis on the new album (surprise, surprise) and 1996's landmark album "Passage." The band played well, but the sound quality was slightly ruined by Tochka's sound engineer and system, which couldn't seem to balance the music correctly.
