  Samael interview @ Tartareandesire.com
This interview with Vorph of the Swiss industrial extreme metal band Samael was done by Boris Van Berlo prior to their live performance at the Biebob in Vosselaar, Belgium on December 18th, 2004.
This is what characterizes a great band and today, having been active for more than 15 years, they are still one of the leading European metal bands.
It is mainly cities I visited myself with the band or personally, and to some I’ve never been, like I haven’t been to China yet, but it is appealing, I want to visit a town like Beijing.

  Rough Edge: Samael CD Reviews
The Swiss fl metal masters Samael are an engaging mix of death metal grinds, atmospheric passages, industrial and electronic beats, and swaying bass lines; all of this is coupled into an impressive blend that rightfully deserves the modern metal tag.
Samael, always striving to continue the journey of progress and exploration, reworks "Son Of Earth" and "Ceremony Of Opposites" from their 1994 release "Ceremony Of Opposites." This release also finds Samael giving way to keyboards a bit more than guitars.
Samael combine the best elements of fl metal in the vein of Emperor and Dimmu Borgir (pain and suffering), but also incorporate the traditional elements of rock 'n' roll that got things started in the first place (passion and rebellion) with modern elements (electronics).

 HISTORY
Few bands have been able to successfully explore the darker sides of metal, and at the same time challenge and satisfy themselves as progressing musicians like Switzerland's own Samael.
Samael's death metal roots quickly became too tight of a parameter for the band, and early albums, "Worship Him" and "Blood Ritual", only hinted at their songwriting creativity.
Samael's goal is and always has been to free the mind from its self-centered state and let it glide into the cosmos - and they have never before managed it as successfully as with "Eternal".

Samael (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Samael are a long-running Swiss heavy metal band formed in 1987.
Although much of their music from the mid-1990s onwards has incorporated electronic sounds which would best define their genre as industrial metal, they are also notable as an early fl metal band and innovator for post-fl metal styles.
Around the time of Ceremony of Opposites (1994), the band started using industrial-styled song techniques, employed by the use of keyboards and (minimalist) acoustic percussion.

Samael: Poisonous Blackened Metal Towards Dark Industrial
Adding keyboardist Rodolphe H to the lineup, Samael's third album, Ceremony Of Opposites, is the album that finds the band leaving the realm of the musically mediocre and entering the realm of the sonically supreme.
While many believe Samael's ultimate performances would be realized in their works that followed, I am of the opinion that Ceremony Of Opposites is nothing short of Samael's finest work, as well as a bonafide Metal classic in every sense of the word.
Samael also give Alice Cooper's "I Love The Dead" the Dark Metal treatment, injecting the song with a venomous passion that surely would have old Alice grinning slyly, with a raised eyebrow.

SAMAEL should be known to everyone of you, be it of positive or negative character so I won’t start with any needless introduction here.
Don't you think it's a pity that most of these bands have given up and are mostly "buried and forgotten" nowadays, as all these mentioned bands had their very special character, which is very rare today?
The charm with older cult bands is that it leaves you free to imagine how they could sound today.

Samael has been a band that has grown by leaps and bounds throughout their development (especially as evidenced on their most recent releases).
In the band's tradition of releasing stop-gap EPs between full length albums, Exodus proves to be the perfect bridge between the clinical coldness of Passage and the wide open, warmer Eternal.
As expected, Samael is continuing their journey into a hybrid of dark metal, atmospheric goth, and industrial.

Get Ready to ROCK! Review of CD album by metal band Samael called Reign Of Light
I could not believe that the band that I had in front of me was the same as the one that has created songs like "Into the Pentagram", "After the Sepulture" and "Mask of the Red Death".
Well, I have to admit that the Metal element was also there, since the band has not abandoned completely the sound that made people once refer to them as one of the gloomiest bands in Europe and also as pioneers of the Black Metal sound, but in much lower proportion than the one expected.
It is true that my preference will always be with the band’s first releases, but that doesn’t mean that I cannot respect and appreciate a band that is not afraid to experiment with their music.

At the dawn of the '90s, SAMAEL emerged with their debut album "Worship Him", setting the foundation of Black Metal for a whole generation.
The band discography is a series of highlights: "Ceremony Of Opposites" (1994), "Passage" (1996), "Eternal" (1999).
Yet above all, the band is regarded as an unforgettable live experience, a glimpse of which has been captured and released on their first DVD "Black Trip" (2003).

The good news is that this is kind of a teaser as the band is suppose to be releasing a full length album via Sound Riot Records very soon.

Metal Coven - Metal Concert Review - Samael / SYL / Cathedral
This gives Samael’s aesthetic a certain electro quality that wouldn’t be out of place on a bill with acts like Hocico, Front Line Assembly, or KMFDM, but that could present a bit more of a hurdle for a metal audience because, let’s face it, we metalheads tend to be purists.
The show was awesome, but in hindsight it occurs to me that Samael seems unwilling to fully embrace the sonic potential that their current line-up possesses.
One of the main reasons I have never been able to get into Samael’s later recordings is that they sound thin and antiseptic compared to the oppressive atmosphere of Ceremony, and this could be helped immensely by digging up some dirty analog sounds and some crushing gated snares, or even just layering some cool atmospherics.

Samael-Passage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
This appears to be Samael at their peak, as they have evolved with each album.
Originally they were a very dark sounding, slower version of a fl metal band, a style which they perfected, but for this album they took on a more industrial style, using more synthesisers, and using a drum machine, both to great effect.
Samael's latest material seems to me to be a bit difficult to listen to because they've gone for such a NIN/Ministry sound (ok maybe not that bad) but Passage is the perfect amalgam of dark metal and industrial.

In the early days Samael could be best described as flmetal but the first change set in with the "Ceremony of opposites" album, which next to flmetal also included keyboards.
With "Eternal" from the year 1999 Samael released an album which, in my eyes, was the best possible album in their own created musical genre.

Get Ready to ROCK! Interview with Vorph of Swiss metal rock band Samael
From the misty mountain hops of this central European country came a band whose aim is to extend every boundary that was set by their predecessors, and to pave the way for new ideas and forms of expression in what can only be described as extreme Metal music.
Samael have just released their new album 'Reign of Light', and Vorph (guitars/vocals) is here to give us an idea of what the crazy Swiss have been up to lately.

Samael: Reign of Light - PopMatters Music Review
Combining a strong, ornate metal influence with the jarring industrial sounds of Skinny Puppy and Ministry, laced with dashes of ambient keyboards, Samael's impact on metal during the 1990s was big, setting the template for symphonic fl metal stalwarts Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, as well as the harsher industrial metal of Rammstein.
Nearly six long years after 1999's Eternal, Samael have made their long-overdue return, and although they're not as cutting-edge as they were a decade ago, to their credit, they keep taking their sound forward, and their new album Reign of Light packs a mighty punch.
Metal is always better when a band like this is around to consistently befuddle fans, and hopefully, it won't take another six years for their next album to come out.

Yes there are bands on the fringes of Black / Death metal that I like such as Tristania and TSOTB but let's face it, except for the male growling they are sort of Gothic, almost Operatic.
But Samael is closer to (but not that close) to Black Metal, however one could swear that in this album they are trying to make a transition to another genre.
It appears that Samael, who started out performing in the Black/Death metal sub-genres, found their Black/Death metal roots to restrictive for their immense talents, hence their steady progression to less extreme venues.

The album found Samael incorporating keyboards and different guitar textures to their sound, and a permanent keyboard player (Rodolphe H.) was drafted soon after.
After signing with the Century Media label, the band returned to the studio with renowned fl metal producer Waldemar Sorychta (famous for his work with Tiamat) to record 1994's impressive Ceremony of Opposites.
Samael began to find their unique voice on this record, combining swirling keyboard melodies with their brutal guitar attack to create what they called "macabre operettas." The stakes were raised even higher on 1996's groundbreaking Passage, which saw Xytras (now simply Xy) taking over keyboard duties as well as programming all his drum tracks.

As has been the case on the last couple of SAMAEL releases this CD is a clash of worlds.
The band's bio is so bold as to claim this synthesis as dialectical thus implying it will elevate into its own thesis, that is rise to be a new standard that will only be changed by the clash of new opposition born solely as a reaction.
No longer is it surprising to hear a CD with the dynamics of "Eternal" which from a marketing standpoint is probably a good thing since a niche has been permanently carved but from an artistic standpoint this may not be good news for the genre.

"We're a part of everything as everything is a part of us" is the cryptic response issued by Vorph, Samael's guitarist and vocalist, when questioned about whether or not he associates Samael with the notorious trappings of fl metal.
Samael's latest album, The Passage, shows the band soaring past its previous accomplishments, captivating the ear with vicious bouts of powerful metal that crafts awe-inspiring choruses and imposing bouts of heaviness on songs such as the malicious opener, "Rain", only to illuminate discordant passages of saturated darkness and alienated melodies on "Angel's Decay".
Samael's forceful lyrical escapades have shifted to a focus upon paganism and astrology, with songs such as "Jupiterian Vibe" and "Born Under Saturn" conveying Samael's interest in the occult.
