Bewitched - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bewitched was an American situation comedy starring actress Elizabeth Montgomery, broadcast on ABC from 1964 to 1972.
Samantha and Darrin Stephens were the first live-action TV couple, with the actors not married to each other in "real life," to sleep in a double bed (not counting Mary Kay and Johnny, who were married).
Bewitched proved very popular with young girls when it first aired in Japan, and is considered to be the inspiration for the Magical girl genre of anime.

Bewitched jumped in that episode where one of Samantha's relatives had cast a wacky spell, and the only way they could explain it was by saying it was one of Darrin's ad campaigns.
Bewitched brought intelligent writers, brilliant actors and creative technicians together and presented a quality entertainment that told meaningful stories about how the American family was weathering the change from the fifties to the sixties.
I agree that Samantha was the central character in the show, however the of Darrin was still an important character in the show and once DY left the quality of the show suffered.

Samantha's husband, Darrin (played by Dick York from 1964 - 1969 then Dick Sargent from 1969 - 1972) also tried to keep the witchcraft under control, but with one wiggle of her nose, Samantha invariably made all the best-laid plans go awry.
Samantha's relatives included her mother Endora, her father Maurice, practical-joking Uncle Arthur, forgetful Aunt Clara and Serena, Sam's mischievous look-alike but badder-than-bad cousin (also played by Elizabeth Montgomery).

Bewitched the Movie   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-10)
Although Bewitched was an original idea, it is worth noting five earlier feature films based on a similar premise that may have influenced its creation: Bell, Book And Candle (1958) and I Married A Witch (1942) - this latter movie was based on the novel The Passionate Witch, by Thorne Smith, who also wrote Topper.
In the TV Series, Darrin Stephens worked for the New York advertising agency McMann and Tate, where his extraordinarily money-grabbing boss Larry Tate was oblivious to Samantha's background and just treated her as a normal, albeit somewhat eccentric, wife whose beauty made her a definite asset to her husband.
They were a bizarre but harmless enough bunch, quite unlike Samantha's wacky identical cousin Serena (also played by Montgomery although she was credited in the cast as Pandora Spocks), a 1960s flower child who turned up occasionally to cause mayhem.

Jeannie and Bewitched have to be two of the most formulaic and predictable shows ever aired on TV.
Every episode of Bewitched had,in different orders and combinations, the same formula of Endora zaps something to muck up Darrin, and it pays off in Darrin's favour; witchcraft of some sort interferes with Darrin's work and he gets fired, then re-hired, when the witchcraft again pays off, or is foiled.
While in the meantime, Gladys Kravitz, Mrs Stavens, or some unsuspecting extra is baffled by it all, and theres always some unbelievable explanation at the end of it all which the long suffering cast members swallow.
