During the early hours of September 27, 1901, a Filipino force under the command of General Lukban launched a surprise attack on Company C of the 9th Infantry, stationed at the small barrio of Balangiga.
Similar to Samar, the army burned villages and herded the population of Batangas into the major cities or concentration camps.
Death rates soared in the province of Batangas as many civilians perished in the concentration camps.

The board passed an ordinance on mining and logging ban in October in response to the clamor of environmental groups to protect the forests of the province, which suffered from the devastating floods in 1989 due to illegal logging.
Eastern Samar is the second province in Eastern Visayas to pass such an ordinance.
Last September, the Samar provincial board passed the ordinance that imposes a 50-year moratorium on the conduct of large-scale mining operations in the province.

Tuesday, PAGASA said satellite and surface data tracked the weather disturbance at 290 kilometers east southeast of Guiuan, eastern part of Samar province, with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour near the center.
The weather bureau forecast the typhoon to be 280 kilometers east northeast of Guiuan, eastern Samar, by Wednesday morning and 320 kilometers east of Borongan, in eastern Samar by Thursday morning.

The assignment of provinces to regions has remained the same, except for one thing: all the provinces that were in Cordillera Administrative Region according to the draft standard have been put in Eastern Visayas region, leaving Cordillera empty - obviously a mistake.
As a rule, Philippine provinces are either part or all of a large island, along with some number of entire smaller nearby islands.
