The Samariá Gorge is a national park in the island of Crete, one of the major touristic attractions of the island.
The gorge is in the prefecture of Chania in the South West of Crete.
The gorge became a national park in 1962, particularly as a refuge for the rare Kri-kri (Cretan goat), which is largely restricted to the park and a few small islands just off-shore.

Most people see the gorge through a "tour." It's not really a tour in the sense that it would be impossible to keep large groups of people together in the gorge.
Every year the rocks that have been swept down the bottom of the Gorge during the winter floods have to be removed from the trail before hikers can be admitted in May. This entails a large number of volunteers moving the rocks out of the way.
The result was that when we visited the Gorge in May 2000 there was an usually large number of stacks for so early in the season.
