Samata Party, a key ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced a major setback yesterday with one of its senior leaders joining the rival Congress party accusing a pro-Hindu BJP of saffronising its allies.
Dr. Shambhu Srivastava, national general secretary and spokesperson of the Samata Party was formally welcomed into the Congress party fold later in the evening by his Congress counterpart R.K. Dhawan and Ahmed Patel, political secretary to the Congress president Sonia Gandhi after he had a meeting with her.
Although Srivastava, hailing from eastern Bihar province, is not a leader with a mass base, his decision to leave the Samata Party with barely 17 months remaining for the next general elections, has come as a major embarrassment for the party.

The State Samata Party under Koijam was instrumental in the collapse of the 11-month-old coalition government of the Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) and the Federal Party of Manipur (FPM), headed by Wahengbam Nipamacha Singh, in February this year.
