Samba Mapangala's voice as he sings his signature tune, Vunja Mifupa, still cuts through the airwaves of many radio stations.
Samba Mapangala and Virunga ventured into the UK in April 1991, where they instantly caused a stir with their great vocals.
Later, Samba settled with his family in Washington D.C. However, he quickly discovered to his disappointment, that African music is not as well appreciated there as it was in Europe.

So popular was Samba Mapangala’s songs throughout the 80’s that while he was once visiting in Boston USA someone stopped him to tell him that it is at one of his performances that the man met his wife.
Samba no longer travels around with the group Virunga for performances saying "wherever I go to I find Virunga group who become the band." He gives one such example as Tabu Osusa who represents Virunga while he is visiting Kenya.
Samba is aware that many of his fans, despite coming to his concerts to reminisce through his music about the good old days most will also be coming to check if he still has what it took to get them dancing to his music a decade ago.

I first heard Samba Mapangala and Orchestra Virunga on the Virunga Volcano CD and was very pleased to find another.
Maybe it is because this was the kind of music I was first acquainted with living in East Africa in the beginning of the 1990's, maybe it is because of Samba Mapangala's clear and lively voice or the sophistication with which this music is always performed: Anyway, I just love it.

Samba Mapangala and Orchestra Virunga / RootsWorld Recording Review
Although originally from Congo and a purveyor of the dominant rumba Lingala, Mapangala migrated eastward to Kenya and began incorporating elements of the local pop music and language to create a melange that became a distinctly East African sound.
Mapangala has migrated some more in the meantime (he now resides in the U.S.), and has put out Ujumbe after a four-year hiatus from touring.
Though some old fans may be disappointed that Ujumbe is not a continuation of Mapangala's Kenya-era sound, it should stand on its own as another successful milestone in the peripatetic musician's career.

One of numerous wannabees who departed a Kinshasa controlled by Mobutu and/or Franco and Rochereau to service rumba-starved Kenyans, Mapangala named his band after a Zairean volcano.
But in the world-beat disco of 1990, Virunga's snaky bass and nimble guitar come off as spaced and delicate as the falsetto leads Mapangala trades with Fataki, his only permanent sideman, and the twin saxophones are low-budget funky, their cheesy embouchure stuck between alto and soprano.
Everywhere he's gone, from Matadi to Kinshasa to Kampala to Nairobi to Paris to his safe Maryland home, Mapangala has brought along a tenor as sweet as a licked frenum and a tune sense that knows what it wants--no wonder he found the sway of Swahili swing so amenable.
