Same Time, Next Year - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Same Time, Next Year is a play by Bernard Slade which tells the story of a couple, married to others, who develop a relationship in which they meet each year at a country inn and spend a weekend together.
Though they only meet once a year, they become important parts of one another's lives.
Paul McCartney contributed the title song to the film, though it was ultimately not used and released by McCartney as a b-side in the late 1980s.

 Same time next year - Victoria - Australia - Travel - theage.com.au
It's time away from missed calls on the mobile, from the boofhead on the train bellowing the fascinating details of his working week into his Nokia, this desire we all have to be constantly, obsessively available.
Now, when most of the group arise, hardly any of the day's over, which means plenty of time for a two-hour walk through the bush, a trip to Lorne, coffee on the balcony with the parrots and the lorikeets with their ridiculously vibrant colours and audacious manners and splitting up the weekend papers.
Twenty-five years later, amid the blue gums and the koalas, the talk was still of music, but there were other pressing topics: kids, careers, schools, holidays, the ebbs and flows.

Of the two, Doris grows the most over time, perhaps because she serves as a symbol for the growth of the country post WW II to post Vietnam and Watergate.
Because of this, Same Time, Next Year cannot transcend beyond its status as a light surface comedy, though it has its moments of sweet poignancy.

At times it comes off as a bit too pat, more like a bad Billy Joel song than an exploration of the characters and their world.
Same Time, Next Year is meant as a crowd pleaser, a funny show with some interesting twists that, in the end, does little to tax the audience.
At times, the show threatens to spiral into a kind of incoherent tedium, but is always rescued from the brink to take the audience deeper and deeper into the maddening situation of our two main characters.
