Traditionally, the Sami had a variety of livelihoods; fishing on the coast and in the inland, trapping animals for fur, sheep herding etc. The best known livelihood is reindeer herding, but only a small percentage of the Sami have been mainly reindeer herders over the last centuries.
The Sami singer Mari Boine introduced joiks to the world audience when she blended it with rhythmic music such as jazz and rock on several award-winning albums in the '80s and '90s.
Sami language is studied in several universities in all countries, most notably the University of Tromsø, that considers Sami a mother tongue, not a foreign language.

The Sami (or Lapp, Laplanders) people live in the northern sections of Finland, Sweden, Norway and the Kola Peninsula (Karelia, Russia).
The only traditional instruments are the fluite "fadno" (=Angelica archangelica) and drums, and purely instrumental music is unknown.
The most famous Sami singer is undoubtedly Mari Boine of Norway, who sings a type of minimalist folk-rock with joik roots.

Sami's also used an instrument which also are found amongst some other "native" cultures -the bullroarer- a specially shaped piece of horn or wood that was attached to a string.
With the constant flow of modern music on TV and radio it is not strange that some Sami artists have mixed rock and other types of modern music and thereby created a type of "worldmusic" of their own -often with interesting results.
But the single Sami artist who have reached a worldwide audience is Marie Boine, (Norway) who sang on a TV-program which was broadcast in most of the countries of the world during the international indigenous year.

Boine's music is easier to describe by negations -- it's not acoustic folk music of any particular tradition, and it's not recognizable as "Nordic." She chants, she wails, she whispers, she sobs and yes, she sings.
She says the singing is influenced by Sami traditions "but with something of me." It is the "something of me" that also guides the rock and jazz influences in the instrumental side of her six-piece band.
The tundra of her childhood is reborn through the music with what Boine describes as "a kind of longing." Yet for all this the music isn't always bleak.
