The son of an adjutant in the Army, Geagea came of age at a time when the barriers to socio-economic advancement within the Christian community had begun to weaken and record numbers of students were arriving at universities on the strength of their intelligence and self-discipline, rather than wealth or family connections.
Geagea's defiance was not powerful enough to bring down the system, but it was powerful enough to shame the governing elite in the eyes of the population.

Geagea was appointed head of LF's Northern Front in the early 1980s, where he commanded around 1,500 battle-hardened henchmen, drawn mainly from his native town of Bsharri and other towns and villages in Northern Lebanon.
In 1986, Geagea became head of the Lebanese Forces militia (a Phalangist-dominated coalition) after staging a coup against Elie Hobeika, who was widely accused of treachery in the Lebanese Christian sector for agreeing to a Syrian-sponsored accord.

Samir Geagea was born on October 25, 1952 in Ain al-Remaneh, one of the suburbs of Beirut.
Geagea, now responsible for the Lebanese Forces and the Kataeb along northern front, moved to a convent in the upper mountains of Jbeil where he reorganized the youth, opened training centers, and began the development of fortifications opposite Syrian positions.
In January 1983, the Lebanese Forces command council appointed Samir Geagea, who retained his responsibilities on the northern front, concurrent of its forces in the Shuf-Aley sector of Mt. Lebanon, an area from which the Lebanese Forces were forced to retreat in September 1983.

Geagea's parole bill and the de facto recognition of the LF as a full-fledged political party that contested the May-June elections, winning six seats, have effectively revoked a 1994 government resolution that outlawed the Lebanese Forces, calling it a civil war militia bent on partitioning Lebanon into sectarian mini-states.
