The denial followed a report by The Sunday Times of London that Samira Shahbandar, purportedly the closest wife to Saddam's heart, had been sent with his only surviving son, Ali, to Lebanon via Syria on the eve of Baghdad's fall to the U.S. army in April.
The British weekly quoted Shahbandar as saying in interview conducted in east Lebanon's Bekaa Valley city of Baalbek that Saddam gave her and Ali $5 million in cash when they left Baghdad to Beirut via Syria.
