Samoa ( Western Samoa until 1997, German Samoa from 1900 to 1914) is a country comprising a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean.
German Samoa was renamed Western Samoa, New Zealand continued the occupation of Western Samoa throughout World War I. In 1919, under the Treaty of Versailles, Germany dropped its claims to the islands and they were granted to New Zealand as a mandate.
Samoa consists of the two large islands of Upolu and Savai'i and seven small islets located about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand in the Polynesian region of the South Pacific.

Samoa beaches are amongst the most exquisite in the South Pacific, although few have facilities (not even drinking water), none have lifeguards and most are almost totally secluded except those alongside a local village.
One of the most romantic locations is to stay on the uninhabited Namua Island which has traditional beach fale accommodation (stay at Namua Beach Fales) with the on-site land-owner preparing 3 meals a day for her guests.
Manono Island, a fifteen minute boat ride from the west coast of Upolu, can be walked around in a few hours with several small secluded beaches along the way and a small cove beach and shallow lagoon at Vaotuua Beach Fales.

Upolu is the main island with the capital town of Apia, although it is smaller than neighbouring Savai'i, just 10 miles to the west.
