The national rugby union team of Samoa is called Manu Samoa (the name of a famous Samoan chief some 10 generations ago).
Rugby union, as in the other Pacific Islands, is a way of life for Samoans with 12 provincial unions made up of around 120 clubs and boasting nearly 5,000 senior and twice as many junior players in a country with a population of just under 175,000 people.
For such a small nation, Samoa has produced an amazing number of top-class players who have gone on to find fame in both rugby union and rugby league including Brian Lima, Freddie Tuilagi, Apollo Perelini, Pat Lam and Stephen Bachop.

Rugby union in Scotland is administered by the Scottish Rugby Union, a founder member of the International Rugby Board in 1886 with fellow Celtic nations Ireland and Wales.
After a poor start in the Six Nations 2003-04 in which Scotland did not win a single match and so qualified for rugby's version of the wooden spoon, things were believed to be steadily improving once again under the Australian coach Matt Williams, the first foreigner to coach the national team.
Meanwhile the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) is under new management, Chief Executive Phil Anderton was leading the way back to financial solvency and implementing major reforms to reverse the decline of the game in Scotland, but he resigned in January 2005 after his boss David Mackay was forced to resign by the SRU's general committee.

Rugby is still a long way from being the first-choice sport for the States' best athletes, a situation that is unlikely to change because of the mass appeal of gridiron, basketball and baseball.
One of the ironies of world rugby is that the Americans are the Olympic champions, winning the gold medal in 1924 when the once strictly amateur sport made its final appearance at the Olympics.
