Sampford Courtenay is situated close to the northern edge of Dartmoor.
Sampford Courtenay took its name 'Sampford' from the sandy ford (now replaced by a road bridge) next to the New Inn.
The name 'Courtenay' was added by the Lords of the Manor, the Courtenay family who also owned Okehampton Castle.

  Prayer Book Rebellion - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Following the enforced change on Whitsunday 1549, on Whitmonday the parishioners of Sampford Courtenay in Devon convinced the priest to revert to the old ways, likening the English prayer book to "a Christmas game".
By June the insurgents were joined by the parishioners of the towns and villages surrounding Sampford Courtenay.
The Cornishmen under Arundell re-formed and took position at Sampford Courtenay, the village some fifteen miles north west of Exeter.

 The Forgotten Martyrs
The rising was, in fact commemorated rather incongruously by the Church of England by a celebration of the 1549 Communion Service in the church of St. Andrew, Sampford Courtenay.
On 18th/19th June 1999 a group of laymen who felt that these martyrs of the faith should not be forgotten organised a two-day pilgrimage in their honour.
On Saturday 19th June the pilgrims went to Sampford Courtenay where the traditional Latin Mass was celebrated and followed by a rosary procession around narrow country lanes ending in the village square where an inspiring talk on the rising was given by Robin Pannell from the steps of the medieval church house.

The Cornish people, few of whom spoke English, were particularly affected by this new legislation.
The villagers of Sampford Courtenay in Devon objected and began what has also come to be known as the 'Western Rebellion'.
The king being a child at the time, further orders were issued by the Lord Protector, the Earl of Somerset, and Archbishop Thomas Cranmer for the continuance of the onslaught on the local populace.

"SAMPFORD COURTENAY, a pleasant village, 5 miles N.E. by N. of Okehampton, has in its parish 1239 souls, and 7962 acres of land, including 342 acres of waste; the hamlets of Willey and Croscombe; and the large village of STICKELPATH.
The latter is on the Exeter and Launceston road, about 2½ miles E. of Okehampton, on the banks of the Taw, and has two chapels, two inns, and corn, bone, and woollen mills.
The Sampford Courtenay Parish Registers are available on microfiche from Harry Galloway Publishers and Booksellers, The Cottage, Manor Terrace, Paignton, Devon TQ3 3RQ.

Sampford Courtenay is a large, rural parish of twelve and a half square miles, stretching from the north end of Dartmoor to the redland upon which the village stands.
The total population is about 500 of which some 150 live in the village and the rest in small hamlets and farms.The village is attractive with many traditional cob and thatch houses.
Until the 1920's it was mainly owned by King's College, Cambridge who remain Lords of the Manor and are active patrons of the Church.

The use of the first English Prayer Book of 1549 on Whit Sunday 1549 marked the beginning of the Prayer Book Rebellion of that year, which started in Sampford Courtenay.
There was then no going back and the men of Sampford Courtenay joined the men of Cornwall and, gathering thousands of supporters in Devon, marched upon Exeter which they besieged for six weeks.
The last battle was fought in this village on August 17th 1549 and the rebellion came to an end with trials and executions.

 Western Rebellion and other adventures
At Sampford Courtenay (in Devon) the local parishioners protested, saying that the practise was 'nothing but a Christmas game'.
Shortly thereafter the forces met again, this time at the site of the original dispute (Sampford Courtenay) and this time the King's forces were victorious and the 'rebels' were routed.
Following this victory the foces of Lord Russell carried out a series of reprisals against the peoples of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset, and many priests were sent to the gallows.

If we go to the Sampford Courtenay Parish Register, we can see there the beginning of the younger Ann Stentiford's enthusiastic career as a single parent.
On 10 Jul 1808, her daughter Deborah was baptised privately, then, on 1 Sep 1811, there is another baptism recorded for a base born child - this time it is a boy named William and the mother is described as Joanna Stentiford.
We must assume that their mother Ann returned to the parish of Sampford Courtenay shortly after the date of this Census, since all these apprenticeship indentures were made by Sampford Courtenay Parish Overseers.
